Catholic Law’s Professor Roger Colinvaux delivered the Norman A. Sugarman Tax Lecture at Case Western Reserve Law School, where he discussed “Emergent Threats to the Charitable Sector.” In his presentation, Professor Colinvaux explored how the U.S. charitable sector has historically operated with considerable independence, supported by state nonprofit laws, the First Amendment, and federal tax law. He noted that, over time, political scandals, legal changes, and regulatory trends have contributed to the weakening of these protections. The lecture addressed how recent executive actions and new legislation may further affect nonprofit organization autonomy and pluralism. Professor Colinvaux concluded by surveying the current and upcoming challenges facing the sector and outlined possible responses to these legal and policy shifts.
