the Honorable William Newman Jr.The Catholic Law community mourns the passing of the Honorable William T. Newman Jr. ’77, a pioneering alumnus, devoted member of the Board of Visitors, and steadfast friend of the Law School.

Judge Newman made history as Arlington, Virginia’s first Black County Board member and later served with distinction as Chief Judge of the county’s Circuit Court. His career was defined by principled leadership and an unwavering commitment to justice.

Beyond the bench, Judge Newman lived a life rich in talent and curiosity. A gifted actor, he was a proud member of Actors’ Equity and the Screen Actors Guild, bringing to the stage the same presence and discipline that characterized his judicial service. His life stood as a testament to the truth that the law, like the arts, calls for both intellect and heart.

At Catholic Law, he gave generously of his time and wisdom. The Law School honored him with its Distinguished Alumni Service Award, and he also received the Alumni Achievement Award from the Black Law Students Association. In 2019, he returned as Commencement speaker, inspiring graduates and reminding them that the practice of law is, at its best, a life of service.

Judge Newman’s career and enduring impact are further celebrated in a recent ARL Now article. His example will continue to guide the Catholic Law community for generations to come. He will be deeply missed and long remembered.
