L to R: Matthew Drauschak, Hali Woods, Natashya Hawley, and Andrew Smith
This weekend at the National Trial Competition Regionals, hosted by American University Washington College of Law, our National Mock Trial students once again delivered extraordinary performances, earning two of the five individual advocacy awards announced at the tournament banquet. In a field of 24 teams and more than 50 competitors, securing those two honors underscored just how exceptional their advocacy was.
Hali Woods (3L) was awarded Best Direct Examination, recognized for a presentation marked by clarity, control, and compelling witness storytelling.
Natashya Hawley (3L) earned Best Closing Argument, honoring a confident, strategic, and powerfully delivered summation that resonated with the judging panel.
"To have two students from Catholic recognized for top advocacy honors in the same regional tournament speaks volumes about their talent, preparation, and courtroom presence," said Director Lindsey Cloud. "I could not be more proud of these extraordinary advocates."
Ms. Woods and Ms. Hawley were joined by 2Ls Andrew Smith and Matthew Drauschak respectively. They tried a felony murder case, both as the prosecution and as the defense. Both pairs competed fiercely throughout the preliminary rounds and were in strong contention for advancement, narrowly missing the quarterfinals in an exceptionally tight field.
"We are incredibly proud of the skill, resilience, and professionalism these students demonstrated — and of the way they continue to elevate our program," added Associate Director Vania Smith.
The team is already back in Slowinski Courtroom at all hours, preparing to compete at the American Association for Justice Regionals next month.
