Catholic Law and University StudentsThis year’s Martin Luther King Jr. Day of Service brought together members of the Catholic University community to honor Dr. King’s legacy through meaningful acts of service. Rachel Lawrence, Associate Director for Pro Bono & Public Interest Career Development, joined Catholic Law students Nathalie Denham, Annabel Morris, Jared Perri, and Khadijah Toran, along with other students from across the University, in volunteering at Catholic Charities’ Mt. Carmel House. Dean Jo Ann R. Regan and Clinical Assistant Professor/Online & On-Campus MSW Program Chair Roslynn Scott-Adams from the National Catholic School of Social Service (NCSSS) also participated in the day’s activities.

Mt. Carmel House, a permanent supportive housing program for women recovering from homelessness, served as the focal point for the day’s efforts. Volunteers began the day with inspiring remarks from student leaders, Campus Ministry, and University President Peter K. Kilpatrick. An opening prayer united the group in their mission before they got to work cleaning, sweeping, dusting, washing walls, and organizing the space to create a welcoming environment for the residents.

Reflecting on the experience, Annabel Morris shared, “I really enjoyed getting the opportunity to give back to our community in honor of Dr. King. It was a fulfilling experience and was fun to connect with students from CUA outside of the law school. I would love to continue supporting the Catholic Charities Mt. Carmel House, and I was inspired by the important work the organization does every day for women in need.”
