Catholic Law recently welcomed members of the community for a gathering in memory of Marshall J. Breger, who passed away unexpectedly this past summer. Dean Stephen C. Payne opened the program with remarks reflecting on Professor Breger’s longstanding influence on the Law School and its Jewish community.

The tribute included contributions from Marshall’s daughters. Sarah offered the Hashkiveinu Prayer, while Esther shared stories that captured their father’s humor and intellectual passion. A panel discussion titled Marshall’s Life & Legacy in the Law followed, moderated by Professor Robert Destro.

Panel speakers included Rabbi Jack Bemporad, Director of the Center for Interreligious Understanding, Ayatollah Seyed Mostafa Mohaghegh Damad, Dean of the Department of Islamic Studies at The Academy of Sciences of Iran, and Dr. Ahmad Iravani from the Center for the Study of Islam and the Middle East. They were joined by The Honorable Edward H. Myers ‘05 of the United States Court of Federal Claims, Cameron Erickson ‘23, Legislative Director for the U.S. House of Representatives, and Dr. Herbert Reginbogen, Professor Breger’s co-author of The Vatican and Permanent Neutrality.

Across their remarks, speakers echoed a common theme: Marshall was a generous mentor, a passionate colleague, a brilliant scholar, and a loyal friend.

The afternoon concluded with a reception in the atrium, where attendees exchanged memories with one another and with Marshall’s wife, Jennie, and their daughters. It was a thoughtful and well-earned tribute to a life devoted to scholarship, service, and teaching.
