Family and Friends Day

On a crisp autumn morning, Catholic Law opened its doors to the families and friends of its students for a special event designed to offer a unique glimpse into the life of a law student. Family and Friends Day provided an opportunity for students to share their rigorous academic world with their most important support networks, fostering deeper connections and understanding of the law school journey.

The day began with welcoming remarks from Dean Stephen C. Payne in the Byron Auditorium, setting a warm and inviting tone for the activities ahead. Attendees then participated in a session titled "The Law School Experience: A Conversation with Friends and Family," which offered valuable insights into the challenges and rewards of legal education. Gemma Forest, Assistant Dean for Student Affairs and Dean of Students for the Upper-Division, introduced a panel of four students, Sofia Guirguis (3L), Will Newell (2L), Jimmy Peccie (1L), and Sarah Webster (3L) who shared their experiences, discussing classroom dynamics, externships, cold calls, and more.

After a brief coffee break, guests were invited to experience the academic rigor firsthand by attending a mock Criminal Law class. Professor Mary Graw Leary led one session, while Professor Cara Drinan guided another, offering families a dynamic and thought-provoking glimpse into the Catholic Law classroom experience.

Brian StolarzThe highlight of the day was a powerful presentation by distinguished alumnus Brian Stolarz ’98, titled "Using Your Catholic Law Talents for Good – The Exoneration of Alfred Dewayne Brown." Stolarz shared his inspiring story of pro bono legal work that led to the exoneration of Alfred Dewayne Brown, a man wrongfully convicted and sentenced to Death Row in Texas. Their story, which was featured in The Netflix docuseries The Innocence Files, served as a profound example of perseverance, dedication, and the pursuit of justice served as an example of the societal impact of a legal education.

Stolarz and Brown stayed after the talk to join the reception, where they engaged with attendees, continued conversations, and shared more about their inspiring journey and impactful work.

Family and Friends Day gave attendees a look into the law school experience but also highlighted the supportive Catholic Law community and its commitment to using legal skills to serve the greater good. Photos from the event can be found on Catholic Law's Instagram.
