Day Division Class of 2028
The Catholic University of America Columbus School of Law (Catholic Law) proudly welcomed its incoming classes of 2028 and 2029 on Tuesday, August 12, 2025, with an engaging three-day orientation program designed to introduce new students to the foundational principles of legal education. This year’s class brought in a total of 184 students from across the United States, with the top five states represented being the District of Columbia, Maryland, Virginia, Pennsylvania, and New Jersey. This dynamic event brought together the full-time day students of 2028 and the part-time evening students of 2029, fostering a sense of camaraderie and support within the Catholic Law community.
Evening Division Class of 2029
The orientation kicked off with a warm breakfast in the student lounge, setting the stage for a day of connection and inspiration. Gemma Forest, Assistant Dean for Student Affairs and Dean of Students for the Upper-Division, welcomed students with an ice breaker kick-off. This interactive activity encouraged students to connect by forming groups based on various factors, such as their state of residence or the number of years since completing their undergraduate studies.
Following the ice breaker, Katherine G. Crowley, Associate Dean for Administration & Chief of Staff, delivered opening remarks, followed by an official welcome address from Dean Stephen C. Payne, who encouraged students to embrace the challenges and opportunities of their legal education journey.
The morning continued with a faculty panel titled “The Rule of Law (School): Faculty Perspectives on How to Succeed in Your 1L Year.” A panel of faculty who teach first-year law students shared their insights, strategies for academic success, and advice on navigating the rigors of law school, while also addressing questions from the eager new students.
Following the panel, students gathered for a welcome luncheon in the Louise H. Keelty and James Keelty, Jr. Atrium, providing an opportunity to connect with peers and upper-division students in a relaxed setting. The afternoon sessions resumed in Byron Auditorium, where faculty and staff led interactive workshops and discussions. The day concluded with a lively cookout on the law school’s lawn. This outdoor gathering offered students a chance to unwind, enjoy great food, and build relationships in a welcoming atmosphere.
The second day of orientation deepened the sense of community and prepared students for the expectations of law school. A highlight of the evening was a special reception for the classes of 2028 and 2029, featuring remarks from Dean Payne and culminating in the induction oath ceremony. The Honorable Rainey Brandt ’95, Associate Judge of the Superior Court of the District of Columbia, administered the oath, marking a significant milestone in the students’ journey into the legal profession. After the oath, Judge Brandt and Dean Payne joined the inductees for a celebratory selfie, capturing the excitement and camaraderie of the moment.
2025 Community Service Day Volunteers
Orientation 2025 concluded on Thursday, August 14, with a community service day, embodying Catholic Law’s mission of service and commitment to the Brookland community. This meaningful day allowed students to engage with local residents, fostering a spirit of collaboration and reinforcing the values that define Catholic Law.
As an additional highlight, Professor Derek Webb, for the second year in a row, offered a walking tour of the District of Columbia on Friday, August 15. This optional event provided students with a unique opportunity to explore the city’s rich history and landmarks while connecting with their peers and faculty in an informal setting.
With the conclusion of this engaging and connection-building orientation, the classes of 2028 and 2029 are now poised to embark on their legal education, equipped with the tools, relationships, and inspiration to succeed. Photos from Orientation have been posted to the law school's Facebook and Instagram accounts.
