The Catholic University of America Columbus School of Law is pleased to announce the appointments of Steven J. Lindsay and Alexander J. Hoffarth to its faculty. Mr. Lindsay joins Catholic Law as an Assistant Professor of Law, and Mr. Hoffarth as a Visiting Assistant Professor of Law for the upcoming academic year.
Professor Lindsay will join Catholic Law effective July 1, after working as a partner at Kirkland & Ellis LLP, where he focused on appeals and complex civil litigation. Prior to his practice at Kirkland, he clerked for Justice Clarence Thomas of the Supreme Court of the United States and for Judge Thomas B. Griffith of the United States Court of Appeals for the District of Columbia Circuit. He also served as a Bristow Fellow in the Office of the Solicitor General at the United States Department of Justice. A graduate of Yale Law School and Princeton University, he brings a deep commitment to legal scholarship and pedagogy. His academic interests include administrative law, legislation, evidence, constitutional law, and legal theory.
“I’m thrilled to join the Catholic Law community, especially at such an exciting time in the Law School’s history,” said Professor Lindsay. “The Catholic Law faculty’s scholarship and its students’ achievements are growing more prolific by the day, all while the Law School fully embraces and invests in its Catholic identity. I’m honored and grateful to play a part in the Law School’s continued flourishing.”
Professor Hoffarth joins Catholic Law effective June 16 following his practice at Hogan Lovells, where he counseled businesses on matters ranging from cross-border mergers and acquisitions to multi-jurisdictional projects such as global carveout transactions. Prior to his practice at Hogan, Hoffarth clerked for Chief Judge Diane S. Sykes of the United States Court of Appeals for the Seventh Circuit. He received his J.D. and M.B.A. from the University of Virginia and his B.A. from Boston College. In addition to his teaching, Hoffarth is uniquely qualified to play a key part in establishing and leading Catholic Law’s new Law & Entrepreneurship Program—an innovative enterprise designed to support student engagement with startups and emerging businesses. The program will feature a new clinical offering, providing hands-on experience to students interested in transactional law, small business advising, and entrepreneurial ventures.
“I am grateful to be visiting at Catholic Law and excited to help launch and lead the new Law & Entrepreneurship Program,” Hoffarth said. “At the heart of this initiative is a simple but powerful idea: that law can be a tool to help build businesses that uphold human dignity and serve the common good. I look forward to using my cross-disciplinary expertise to help train the next generation of lawyers to think like builders and serve as trusted partners to entrepreneurs.”
“It’s an exciting moment for the Law School to welcome both Steve Lindsay and Alexander Hoffarth to our academic community,” said Stephen C. Payne, Dean and Knights of Columbus Professor of Law. “They bring not only exceptional experience from prestigious judicial clerkships and two of the country’s most respected law firms, but also a clear devotion to teaching and the development of the next generation of legal professionals. Their insights and energy will be a tremendous asset to our students and to the entire Law School.”
The appointments reflect Catholic Law’s continued investment in strengthening its faculty and expanding its offerings in key areas of the law critical to today’s legal landscape.
