A Natural Fit for Law School

Gerald with his family after CommencementOriginally from Monmouth County, New Jersey, he graduated magna cum laude from The Catholic University of Americca’s undergraduate program, where he studied Philosophy and Politics and served as president of the student body. When asked why he chose to attend law school, Sharpe reflected on his love for reading, writing, debating, and problem-solving. "Pursuing a law degree felt like a natural step," he said. "A J.D. is so versatile—it provides tools to help others and opens doors to a wide range of careers. Law school offered the intellectual challenge I was looking for, as well as a strong foundation for future opportunities."

Building Practical Skills Through Externships and Co-curriculars

DC CupSharpe has gained invaluable legal experience during his time at Catholic Law, completing prestigious externships with institutions such as the Becket Fund for Religious Liberty, the U.S. Department of Justice, Judge Richard J. Leon of the U.S. District Court for the District of Columbia, and global law firm Squire Patton Boggs. He was also the Lead Articles Editor of the Law Review and a competing member of the Moot Court and National Trial teams, earning numerous accolades for his oral advocacy. "Each opportunity helped me develop essential legal skills, build professional connections, and refine my career goals," Sharpe explained.

Standout Moments at Catholic Law

Sharpe receives alumni council awardSeveral key experiences have shaped Sharpe’s time at Catholic Law. These include working on an amicus brief for the U.S. Supreme Court as part of the law school’s Religious Liberty Clinic, an experience he described as a "defining moment in my legal education and discernment." Sharpe also attended three exclusive talks by Supreme Court justices hosted by Catholic Law’s Center for the Constitution and the Catholic Intellectual Tradition, calling these events "inspiring and unprecedented opportunities to hear from our nation’s highest jurists." As president of the school’s Federalist Society chapter, Sharpe organized events that enriched the school’s intellectual environment and fostered a sense of community—efforts that helped the chapter earn national recognition for its excellence.

At graduation, Sharpe received the prestigious Columbus Award, recognizing the student who best embodies the qualities and spirit of the Columbus School of Law, as well as the Alumni Association Award for academic excellence, outstanding co-curricular involvement, and dedication to the law school community.

Looking Ahead

Sharpe’s future builds upon his time at Catholic Law. Upon graduation, he will join Squire Patton Boggs as an associate before federal clerkships with Judge Elizabeth L. Branch of the United States Court of Appeals for the Eleventh Circuit and Judge Lee P. Rudofsky of the United States District Court for the Eastern District of Arkansas.
