Why did you choose to go to law school?

I’ve always wanted to go to law school because I am passionate about government, politics, and helping others. I was hesitant to take on the financial burden, so before law school I worked for a few years at a government relations firm and in local government. The experience solidified my desire to go to law school and learn how to be an advocate for those navigating our complex legal system.

Why Catholic Law? (prior to attending)

I chose Catholic Law because I was already living in the DC area and knew I wanted to stay. I was drawn to Catholic Law because of the small class sizes. Alumni shared positive experiences they had and I was eager to join the community.

What Externships or other practical experiences did you do at Catholic Law?

Kalie Fields at LSPsDuring my time at Catholic Law I participated in the Families and the Law Clinic. It was the best experience. During the clinic you are interacting and representing clients in a variety of matters. I was able to, along with my partner, facilitate a mediation session, interview clients, and even appear before a DC judge for our Special Immigrant Juvenile Status case. This was my first exposure to immigration law and it was an enlightening experience.

I was also a member of our Alternative Dispute Resolution (ADR) team. The team participates in arbitration, negotiation, and mediation competitions. I was a part of the negotiation team and had the pleasure of participating in a competition at Richmond Law School. It was a great opportunity to practice my negotiation skills and network with other students.

What experiences at Catholic Law were highlights for you?

Anderson and FieldsThe clinic experience was definitely the highlight for me. To be able to represent a client before leaving law school was so valuable. The amazing professors and staff of the clinic taught me so many indispensable skills that I will take with me throughout my career.

I took Criminal Justice Reform with Professor Drinan. As part of the class we visited the D.C. Jail. It was an eye opening experience where we got to connect with people on the inside about favorite foods, movies, activities, and more. The visit humanizes our criminal justice system and helped remind me why I choose to go to law school. The individuals I met that day and their stories will undoubtedly stay with me forever.

As corny as it is, the friendships I have made are another highlight of my time at Catholic Law. I am so fortunate to have had amazing classmates that have become best friends. Along with professors that quickly became mentors.

What are your plans after graduation?

After graduation, I will be working at Shulman Rogers in the Family Law Department. I am so excited to be staying in the DC area. I cannot wait to start my legal career advocating for individuals as they navigate complex family disputes.

Why Catholic Law now?

The amazing professors and staff at Catholic Law make it the amazing school that is it. Everyone I interact with cares so deeply about my success as a lawyer and as a person.
