Why did you choose to go to law school?

Before I was born, my parents became certified foster parents in New York state, creating what they lovingly referred to as a “revolving front door.” Growing up, I experienced the child welfare system in one of the closest ways possible—without being a child directly within it. That upbringing shaped my perspective and ignited a passion for improving outcomes for children and families involved in the system. Pursuing a career in law felt like the most impactful path to contribute to meaningful change, so I chose to attend law school with the goal of making a difference as an advocate within the child welfare system.

Why Catholic Law? (prior to attending)

I was drawn to Catholic Law because of its outstanding reputation for clinical experiences. When searching for a law school, I prioritized finding a program with a Family Law clinic, as I wanted hands-on exposure to the field to confirm it was the right path for me. Another key factor in my decision was the strong sense of community at Catholic Law, which is evident among both current students and alumni. Knowing I wouldn't be just another face in the crowd—and that I’d have a network of support guiding me every step of the way—was incredibly reassuring. And, of course, studying law in the heart of the Nation’s capital was an opportunity I couldn’t pass up.

What Externships or other practical experiences did you do at Catholic Law?

Julie Reed and Kalie FieldsDuring my time at Catholic Law, I have gained valuable practical experience through a variety of opportunities. In my 1L summer, I participated in the International Business and Trade Law Summer Study Abroad Program. This program allowed me to take classes alongside American students and peers from Jagiellonian University for five weeks. Following the coursework, I completed a legal externship at the Polish law firm Olesiński i Wspólnicy in Wrocław, which provided hands-on exposure to international legal practices.

In addition, during the spring of my 2L year and the fall of my 3L year, I served as a student attorney with the Columbus Community Legal Services Families and the Law Clinic. Under the guidance of Professors Catherine Klein and Erin Scheick, I gained meaningful experience advocating for clients and developing my legal skills.

Since my 2L year, I have also worked as a student assistant in the Development and Alumni Relations office, further broadening my professional perspective. Each of these experiences has been invaluable in shaping my legal education and preparing me for my career.

What experiences at Catholic Law were highlights for you?

Valentina Perez, Julie Reed, and Mariah McGuinessOver the past three years, I’ve experienced countless memorable moments, but I’ll share one highlight from each year. During my 1L year, the standout moment was attending a powerful talk by Brian Stolarz '98 and Dewayne Alfred Brown. Brian shared his legal journey to secure Dewayne’s freedom after a wrongful conviction kept him on death row for 12 years—a story that deeply inspired me. In my 2L year, the highlight was participating in a clinic hearing alongside my partner, Kali Fields. Together, we secured a custody order and a Special Immigrant Juvenile Status predicate order for our client, a truly rewarding experience. As a 3L, I believe graduation will be the ultimate highlight, but so far, it’s been a joy to continue working with the incredible staff in the Alumni Office, help plan and execute Cardinal Weekend, and savor every remaining moment as a law student with my friends before diving into bar exam preparations.

What are your plans after graduation?

Following graduation I hope to start my career in public interest work and family law.

Why Catholic Law now?

Sarah Rahmjoo and Julie Reed speaking at the 2025 Admitted Students DayThe sense of community is unparalleled. Catholic Law may be a smaller school, but it offers the expansive network of a larger institution. During my time as a student, I built meaningful relationships with professors and university staff because I wasn’t just another face in the crowd—I was recognized as an individual. Beyond academics, Catholic Law emphasizes not only shaping skilled lawyers but also fostering compassionate individuals. The school prioritizes the importance of giving back, instilling a deep commitment to serving the community surrounding the university.
