The Law and Technology Student Association (LTSA) hosted a panel titled "New Rules for Your Data: Changes in Consumer Privacy Regulation" on Wednesday, October 31. The group of panelists were brought together to discuss the important topic of data privacy. Panelists included:

Moderator: Josh Bercu, Associate, Wilkinson Barker Knauer
Christine Bannan, Consumer Protection Counsel, EPIC
Melissa Maalouf, Shareholder, ZwillGen
Shaundra Watson, Director of Policy, BSA | The Software Alliance
Rachel Wolbers, Policy Director, Engine

This panel came in the wake of the passage of California's new privacy law and the prospect of other states and the federal government following suit. New privacy laws have also come into effect in the European Union, with others proposed in India and Brazil, that have extraterritorial implications for American technology companies.

"It is clear that the regulations on some of the most popular digital services in the world are changing quickly. This panel invited lawyers who represent tech companies, startups, and consumers to discuss these changing dynamics, what is driving them, and their effects on consumers and businesses alike," LTSA President Lauren Huston (2L).

If you'd like to continue the conversation join the Journal of Law and Technology on January 25, 2019, from 12:30 p.m. - 5:15 p.m. for a symposium entitled "Data Privacy Symposium: The Future of Data Privacy Regulations". The symposium will feature keynote speaker Ben Wiseman, Director of the Office of Consumer Protection, Washington, D.C. Attorney General's Office.
