Bart Lambergman (L) and Tom McMillen (R), President and CEO, of LEAD1 Association at LEAD1's Annual Meeting

This past week, CUA Law student Bart Lambergman (3L) was quoted in a CBS Sports article regarding the protection of student-athletes in states with legalized sports betting.

In May, the United States Supreme Court cleared the way for states to legalize sports betting, ruling that the federal ban on state-sanctioned sports betting intrudes on state's affairs and is thus unconstitutional. This ruling invalidated the federal law, the Professional and Amateur Sports Act (PASPA), which prohibited sports wagering on single game sporting contests except in a few states.

According to Lambergman, who is a legal and policy researcher for LEAD1 Association (LEAD1), which represents the athletic directors of the 131-member schools of the Football Bowl Subdivision (FBS), "LEAD1's position is that we need to protect student-athletes. There is vulnerability in any sports betting scandal ... but all those scandals that have occurred in the last 25 years have been in college."

Lambergman has worked on a number of issues since he started working for LEAD1 during his 1L year including pay-for-play litigation, sports betting compliance, Title IX best practices, as well as writing a policy paper on a group licensing model submitted to the Rice Commission on College Basketball.

Former basketball All-American and Congressman Tom McMillen is LEAD1's CEO and President.
