During the summer of 2016, Kate Heise (2E) had the opportunity to work on a pro bono project with Kids In Need Of Defense (KIND). Heise learned about the opportunity through the CUA Law Pro Bono Program. KIND paired her with a volunteer attorney and she got the chance to work on an asylum case for a young woman who suffered severe sexual abuse and faced gang threats in El Salvador.

Heise assisted the attorney with in-depth legal and country conditions research, writing, and editing legal briefs. This allowed Heise to not only further her understanding of the doctrine, but also put it to practice. "The attorney I worked with was very knowledgeable and I was able to learn about the asylum process and immigration law - a type of law I had not previously been exposed to," Heise said.

On October 17, 2016, Heise was informed that the individual was successfully granted asylum, and will be able to stay in the U.S. free from fear of persecution.

On October 26, 2016, KIND visited CUA Law to conduct a training session for students interested in pro bono opportunities with the organization. The event was hosted by the CUA Law Pro Bono Program.
