CUA Law E-newsletter - June 2017
Dean Daniel F. Attridge
A letter from Dean Daniel F. Attridge:

Dear CUA Law Alumni, Family, and Friends,

Our 2016-17 academic year has come to a successful conclusion.  Our students are now looking forward to summer jobs or internships, some well-earned vacation time, and in the case of our newest graduates, preparation for bar examinations.  Our faculty will refocus on their scholarship and other pursuits over the summer months.  In the meantime, we will all be getting ready for the upcoming fall semester beginning in mid-August with a new class of incoming day and evening students.  This is a brief report on what’s been happening and what’s coming up:

1.  Class of 2017 Commencement.  We had a beautiful day for our 128th annual Commencement exercises on May 26. In accordance with our traditions, we celebrated graduation at a magnificent venue — the Basilica of the National Shrine of the Immaculate Conception — and afterwards with a reception on the Law School Lawn.

CUA Law Students Can Join New Veterans Advocacy and Estate Planning Clinic

Columbus Community Legal Services (CCLS) has developed a new clinic designed to fit the busy schedule of CUA Law evening students. The Veterans Advocacy and Estate Planning Clinic gives students in both the Evening and Day Division the opportunity to represent real clients in real cases under the supervision of an experienced clinical law professor.

Student attorneys will fight for the rights of those who have served our country in the armed forces and have been denied veterans’ benefits. Students will work closely with their clients from the initial interview onward and will receive a thorough grounding in both Administrative Law and Appellate Practice. Students will learn and carry out the practical aspects of fact investigation, legal research, legal drafting, negotiations and oral and written advocacy. In addition, the Clinic will offer estate planning services to both veterans and non-veterans alike. Student attorneys will draft wills, trusts, health care directives and powers of attorney.

CUA Law Alumni Council Attends SPIL Auction Wine Tasting

On May 19, 2017, 10 members of the Law School’s Alumni Council and Brian Stolarz '98, hosted six third-year law students for a wine tasting at the Washington, D.C., office of LeClairRyan. The event was part of the 2017 Students for Public Interest Law (SPIL) Live Auction and marked the third occasion that the Alumni Council offered such an event for bidding at the fundraiser. Leah Quaile’s ’12 father and sommelier, Jimmy Quaile, provided his expertise to guide the students and alumni as they tasted wines from around the world. Jim Anagnos '96, CUA Law Board of Visitors member and past president of the Alumni Council, donated the wine.
