Dear CUA Law Alumni, Family, and Friends,

With the cherry and pear blossoms in full bloom, the season of spring has finally arrived and along with it our busiest time of the year.  We are in the midst of a whirlwind of activities to conclude our academic year, as we move forward toward the end of classes on April 28, final exams from May 3 to 16, and graduation on May 27.  This is a brief report on what’s been happening and what’s coming up:


1. Rankings.  CUA Law is ranked #103 among law schools in the latest U.S. News & World Report rankings.  This is an improvement of five places from last year’s ranking of #108.  U.S. News also ranked our clinical training program at #21 and our part-time J.D. program at #27

Robert Destro
Professor Robert Destro was quoted in an article published by GVH entitled "Apple's Fight for Privacy Stifled by Feds' War on Terror"

Megan La Belle
Professor Megan La Belle was invited to present her paper Fee Shifting for PTAB Proceedings at the Texas Intellectual Property Law Journal Symposium

Mary Leary
Professor Mary Leary testified before the U.S. Sentencing Commission regarding proposed sentencing guidelines that address child pornography offenses, published "A second byte at Apple" op-ed, and was quoted in an article about forced labor

Antonio Perez
Professor Antonio Perez participated in a legal colloquium, International Law, Foreign Law, and the U.S. Constitution

Mark Rienzi
Professor Mark Rienzi appeared on Fox News defending the Little Sisters of the Poor, he was was also interviewed and quoted in various media outlets in regards to the Little Sisters of the Poor v. Burwell on March 23, and had a second interview on Fox and was joined by CUA's President John Garvey

CUA Law Moves Up 5 Places in 2017 U.S. News Rankings and Earns New Accolades

Catholic University’s Columbus School of Law is ranked #103 among law schools in the U.S. News & World Report 2017 Best Graduate Schools rankings, released on March 16, 2016. The new ranking is a five-point improvement from last year's rankings where CUA Law finished at #108. U.S. News ranked our part-time J.D. program at #27 and our clinical training program at #21.

CUA Law was also recently ranked as one of the Top 50 Go-To Law Schools by the National Law Journal. Read more here.


Law School Honors Recent Alumni Members of the Bench

The Columbus School of Law recognized thirty-two graduates who now serve or have served as judges, hosting a luncheon and ceremony in their honor on February 26, 2016.

The judges’ names are now listed among 270 fellow graduates currently inscribed on the Judges Wall, on display along the third floor classroom corridor that was originally dedicated in 1998 as part of the Centennial Celebration of the Columbus School of Law.


The Honorable Janice Rogers Brown Delivers Brendan F. Brown Lecture on Higher Law

On the evening of March 16, 2016, students, alumni, faculty, staff, and guests gathered at the Columbus School of Law for the 34th annual Brendan F. Brown Lecture Series, entitled “The Need for ‘Honest Faith in a Higher.’”

The audience was welcomed with opening remarks from CUA Law Dean Daniel F. Attridge, who introduced the Honorable Janice Rogers Brown, federal judge on the United States Court of Appeals for the District of Columbia Circuit. To read more about Judge Brown's presentation, please click here


Evening Law Student and Alumni Event Highlights the Connected Community at CUA Law

The Columbus School of Law held its annual Evening Law Student and Alumni Reception at Akin Gump Strauss Hauer & Feld LLP in Washington, D.C., on March 2. A tradition that goes back eleven years, the reception is held during the Law School's spring recess to allow evening students on break from class an opportunity to more easily attend an alumni event. As with other events hosted by the CUA Law Alumni Association, the Evening Law Student and Alumni Reception brought together students, faculty, staff, and alumni and provided them an opportunity to network and connect with each other in a professional setting. This year the event was also open to students who have been accepted to the Law School’s evening program for admission in August 2016.


Admitted Students Attend An Evening With CUA Law at Jones Day

International law firm, Jones Day, hosted the Columbus School of Law for its 12th annual joint-reception, An Evening With CUA Law on March 10. The reception brought together admitted students, current student leaders, faculty, staff, and alumni, providing admitted students an opportunity to learn more about the special community at CUA Law and others in attendance a chance to network and connect with each other in a professional setting.


2016 Dean’s Dinner Benefiting Student Scholarships

The Board of Visitors of the Columbus School of Law, along with Dean Daniel F. Attridge, is pleased to host the 4th Annual Dean’s Dinner, with proceeds benefiting Student Scholarships. The Dean’s Dinner will take place on Thursday, April 21, 2016 at the Cosmos Club, and will feature Kenneth R. Feinberg as the guest speaker.  All alumni and friends are invited to attend and urged to support this great cause.

2016 Communications Milestone Award Ceremony & Reception – June 2, 2016

The 2016 Milestone Award will be presented to Bryan N. Tramont, Esquire, Managing Partner of Wilkinson Barker Knauer, LLP ("WBK") and CUA Law Adjunct Professor, on June 2, 2016 at The Mayflower Hotel.  Mr. Tramont is being honored for his longstanding and wide-ranging support of the Columbus School of Law and the Law and Technology Institute (formerly the Institute for Communications Law Studies) (“Institute”) as well as the study of communications law.  For more information about the Milestone Award, the 2016 event, and registration and sponsorship details, please click here.
