CUA Law E-newsletter - April 2015
Dean Designate Daniel F. Attridge
A letter from Dean Daniel F. Attridge:

Dear CUA Law Alumni, Family, and Friends,

Spring has finally arrived in earnest (at least on the calendar, if not in the current outdoor temperatures) and along with it our busiest time of the year.  We are in the midst of a crescendo of activities to conclude our academic year, as we rush forward toward the end of classes on April 28, final exams from April 30 to May 11, and graduation on May 22. This is a brief report on what’s been happening and what’s coming up:

1.  D.C. Circuit at CUA Law.  On March 19, the United States Court of Appeals for the District of Columbia Circuit, often referred to as the second most important court in the nation, held oral arguments in three cases in our Slowinski Courtroom, offering CUA Law students a rare opportunity to watch justice in action.  The panel consisted of Chief Judge Merrick B. Garland, Judge Judith W. Rogers, and Judge Cornelia T.L. Pillard, who heard cases presenting issues concerning the First Amendment, criminal sentencing, and tax law.  It is believed to be only the third time the D.C. Circuit has sat outside of its regular downtown location.

Students Turn Out to Watch Federal Appeals Court Proceedings Conducted at CUA Law

The United States Court of Appeals District of Columbia Circuit considered oral arguments in three cases on its docket at Catholic University’s Columbus School of Law on March 19, providing fortunate law students a rare close up look at how a federal appeals court conducts its business.

New Mobile App Promotes Columbus School of Law

A custom-built application easily downloaded to both Android and Apple products including mobile phones and tablets is now available.  The new app permits prospective and current students, alumni, faculty, staff, and other stakeholders to learn about the Law School and access the website.

The free app is found in Apple's App Store and Google’s Play Store. Both locations have the app under the search term: Catholic University Law.  The Law School is also exploring the possibility of making the app available through Amazon’s app store as well.

2015 Dean's Dinner

The Board of Visitors of the Columbus School of Law, along with Dean Daniel F. Attridge, will host the 3rd Annual Dean’s Dinner on April 9, 2015, with proceeds benefiting Student Scholarships. The Dean’s Dinner will take place at the Army Navy Club, and will feature W. Neil Eggleston as the guest speaker.

The Alumni & Development Office is pleased to announce that the event is nearly sold out and that only a small number of tickets remain available. If you would like more information about this event or are interested in serving as a named host, please click here or email

CUA Law Mentor Program

For the third academic year in a row, the Alumni Office is seeking alumni to assist current and incoming students in the form of Mentors and Alumni Advisors.  Once again, each incoming 1L student, Day and Evening, will have the opportunity to be paired with an alumni mentor in a practice area that interests him or her. We are seeking alumni to fulfill this need. We also have a continual need for alumni to serve as general advisors. Alumni Advisors work with the Office of Career and Professional Development to advise students about practice areas, conduct mock interviews, discuss clerkships, etc. Interactions with students can be by phone or in person and normally require a commitment of no more than one-half hour on an as-needed basis.

Mentors are still needed! Please consider serving in either one or both of these capacities. As alumni, you have much knowledge and insight to share with our students, and we greatly appreciate your assistance. Click here to learn more about these opportunities and to register as a mentor or advisor.

STaying Connected with CUA Law Alumni on Facebook

Looking for ways to connect and network within your favorite CUA Law “affinity” group? We can help! The Office of Alumni Relations is happy to create and maintain Facebook pages dedicated to a particular practice area, class or geographic location. Most recently, and due to alumni demand, a Florida alumni Facebook page was launched to provide alumni in the Sunshine State opportunities to interact with one another and to promote the interests of CUA Law and its alumni.

If you would like to create a similar page for your CUA Law group, please contact the Office of Alumni Relations. And if you would like to connect with fellow alumni in Florida, click here to “like” the group.

Help Us Reach 1000 Donors Before the
End of the Fiscal Year

As our fiscal year winds down, we would like to say thank you to the over 800 alumni and friends who have already supported the CUA Law students and faculty with a gift to the Law School this year. We are just under 200 donors away from reaching 1000 donors this year.  Help us to reach this goal by clicking here and making a gift to CUA Law TODAY!

Gifts to CUA Law help to support our many programs and initiatives, and provide scholarship assistance to our students. These contributions are crucial to maintaining and enriching the CUA Law experience.

Your contributions to the Law School, no matter the size, are essential to the school. We sincerely thank all who have already generously donated and want to remind those who have not yet made a contribution to please do so by the end of the fiscal year, April 30th.  Your gift will make a difference.

If you have questions about giving to CUA Law please contact Annual Fund Coordinator, Lauren Enlow at 202-319-4638.
