CUA Law E-newsletter - March 2015
Dean Designate Daniel F. Attridge
A letter from Dean Daniel F. Attridge:

Dear CUA Law Alumni, Family, and Friends,

We are nearly halfway through our schedule of classes in our 14-week spring semester.  Despite some cold temperatures and accompanying snow and ice, our students, faculty, and staff have been engaged in a whirlwind of activities during the past month. This is a brief report on what’s been happening and what’s coming up:

1.  Admissions.  From past experience, we know that prospective students who visit us on campus are much more likely to matriculate than those who don’t.  Once on campus, our visitors have a chance to experience the CUA Law Advantage for themselves, engaging with our collegial students, meeting our supportive staff, observing our talented faculty in the classroom, and touring our beautiful facility.  To capitalize on this situation, we hosted an Open House on January 29, which drew strong interest from prospective students, and we will hold another one on March 4.

Law School’s Clemency Clinic Praised, Encouraged, and Supported by former Gov. Robert L. Ehrlich Jr.

Speaking at an evening reception that drew a large portion of the first year class, former Maryland Governor Robert L. Ehrlich Jr. (2003-2007) discussed the good work and vital importance of CUA Law’s Innocence Project Clinic and Clemency Project, which Ehrlich established a formal affiliation with more than a year ago as a way to permanently support an issue he cares deeply about.

2015 SPIL Auction Raises $21,000 to Support Student Stipends

The law school’s 24th annual Students for Public Interest Law (SPIL) auction raised a total of approximately $21,000 this year, enough to subsidize the public interest work of up to 17 CUA Law students next summer.  Thank you to all alumni who gave to SPIL, participated in the online auction or attended this CUA Law signature event.

CUA Law Mentor Program

For the third academic year in a row, the Alumni Office is seeking alumni to assist current and incoming students in the form of Mentors and Alumni Advisors.  Once again, each incoming 1L student, Day and Evening, will have the opportunity to be paired with an alumni mentor in a practice area that interests him or her. We are seeking alumni to fulfill this need. We also have a continual need for alumni to serve as general advisors. Alumni Advisors work with the Office of Career and Professional Development to advise students about practice areas, conduct mock interviews, discuss clerkships, etc. Interactions with students can be by phone or in person and normally require a commitment of no more than one-half hour on an as-needed basis.

Please consider serving in either one or both of these capacities. As alumni, you have much knowledge and insight to share with our students, and we greatly appreciate your assistance. Click here to learn more about these opportunities and to register as a mentor or advisor.
