The Catholic University of America
CUA Law Path Forward Initiative

The dramatically changing landscape for law schools has forced CUA Law to think, long and hard, about what makes it distinctive and how we must chart our “path forward” in these challenges. We have some amazing strengths that make us particularly attractive to law students. These include our location in the Nation’s capital, our mission as part of Catholic University, and the expertise of our outstanding faculty. Building on these strengths, we recently decided to pursue three new initiatives. They involve issues of compliance, investigations, and corporate responsibility; criminal justice reform; and religious liberty. Each initiative will capitalize on our Washington location, our faith-based mission, and our very talented faculty. All three initiatives will directly benefit our students. The students will have new, enhanced opportunities to learn about cutting-edge legal issues. They will acquire valuable practical experience to enhance their marketability as job applicants. They will, in very concrete ways, serve others who need well-trained lawyers as their instruments of action.

On June 2, 2017 Catholic University held the Cardinals Tribute Dinner at which the Cardinal members of CUA's Board of Trustees honored leadership gifts to the University. One such gift was a $1,000,000 commitment from an anonymous donor to fund the start of two of our Path Forward initiatives: compliance, investigations, and corporate responsibility; and religious liberty. In addition, we have received over $250,000 funding for criminal justice reform pilot program focused on access to justice. His Eminence Donald Cardinal Wuerl, Archbishop of Washington, recognized these donations and spoke about the importance of these initiatives. Each of these initiatives finds its roots in the Catholic underpinnings of our mission, and all speak to emerging present-day issues impacting society. Please view the video above highlighting support of the Law School’s new initiatives and use the links below to learn more about these three exciting initiatives and the faculty who are advancing them. We welcome your thoughts and questions about these new endeavors.
