CUA Law student, Ahad A. Khilji (2L), received the 2018 South Asian Bar Association of Washington, D.C., Summer Public Interest Fellowship. SABA-DC provides financial assistance in the form of summer fellowships to law students working in the public interest sector for the benefit of the South Asian community and the metropolitan D.C. area. The public interest sector includes six types of settings: nonprofit organizations; legal services organizations; district attorneys/public defenders; federal, state, and local government; federal and state clerkships/judicial internships; and public service law firms.

Khilji will be clerking in the Trial Division of the Public Defender Service for the District of Columbia (PDS). He will be working closely with attorneys on all aspects of criminal cases in the District of Columbia Superior Court. His duties will include comprehensive legal research and writing, document drafting, discovery demands, and client contact. He also plans to participate in the Trial Practice Group (TPG) trial advocacy training program at PDS.

Reaction from Khilji:

"I am fortunate to have been selected as a 2018 South Asian Bar Association of Washington, D.C. Summer Public Interest Fellow. As a Fellow I will attend the SABA-DC Annual Public Interest Gala at the end of the year, and assist SABA-DC in associated fundraising efforts for next year’s Fellowship. I will also attend events presented or co-sponsored by SABA-DC, in addition to the Gala, during the 2018-2019 school year. Finally, I will promote the SABA-DC Public Interest Fellowship Program at CUA. This will include responsibilities such as circulating emails during the 2019 Public Interest Fellowship application period promoting the fellowship, giving a presentation to CUA's SALSA or APALSA promoting the Fellowship in the Spring semester, and attending SABA-DC Public Interest Fellowship related events as they arise.

Working at PDS is a tremendous opportunity and I am looking forward to offering legal help to indigent clients in the District of Columbia."
