Kevin Ryan, the president of Covenant House, was the inaugural speaker in a new initiative, “Faith in Action: A Six Part Series on Faith, Justice and Service,” that made its debut at the law school on Sept. 17. The lecture series is geared toward first-year students but open to any interested student.

Faith in Action (three programs scheduled for each semester) aims to provide a unique opportunity for law students to explore the connections between faith, justice, and service with one another, exchange ideas with guest participants, and participate in some real world service initiatives in the local community.
Ryan, the author of the national best-seller “Almost Home,” spoke to CUA law students of his career in the service of vulnerable youth. He covered options available to lawyers who want to help, and discussed how to persevere in that pursuit even when it runs counter to a prevailing culture that often seems to prize prestige and wealth above service.
“Kevin was a dynamic and inspirational speaker, who offered much to reflect on in thinking about professional life as a vocation and contemplating how to use the great gifts of education and talent to serve others in ways that can bring great good to a needy world,” said Catholic University law Professor Lucia Silecchia, one of the organizers of the Faith in Action initiative.
Established in New York City in 1972 as shelter for homeless youth, Covenant House is currently the nation’s largest privately funded nonprofit organization responding to the needs of young people who suffer from homelessness, abuse and neglect. Covenant House has “houses” in 22 cities throughout the United States, Canada, and Latin America.
Covenant House serves over 60,000 homeless young people each year, giving them the love and support they need to find their way off of the streets and out of truly debilitating life situations.
Two more Faith in Action programs are planned this fall.
  • October 15 -  Faith in Action: An Interfaith Roundtable
  • November 4 - Faith in Action: An Introduction to Service Opportunities
