CUA Law E-newsletter - January 2018

Dean Daniel F. Attridge
A letter from Dean Daniel F. Attridge:

Dear CUA Law Alumni, Family, and Friends,

Our fall 2017 semester has reached a successful conclusion. Our students have taken their final exams and turned in their final papers.  Our faculty members are busy grading all of this work, while preparing for the next semester.  We are all ready to enjoy the Christmas holiday break.  Our new spring 2018 semester will begin on January 8.  This is a brief report on what’s been happening and what’s coming up:

1.  Christmas.  On behalf of all of us at CUA Law, we wish you a very Merry Christmas and a very Happy New Year.  Or, if you do not celebrate Christmas, we wish you all the best in commemorating your own faith or other traditions at this time of year.  We hope you enjoy celebrating this holiday season with your family and friends.

The Catholic University of America Columbus School of Law's Tax Program was ranked #27 in the country by PreLaw magazine's fall 2017 issue (vol. 21, no. 2).

PreLaw magazine graded law schools based on the breadth of their curricular offerings. The scores were weighted as follows: 30% for a concentration, 24% for a clinic, 12% for an externship, 9% for a journal, 8% for a student group and 5% for a certificate.

Scholarship at CUA Law Repository Reaches Nearly 1 million downloads

The 1 millionth download from the institutional repository, Scholarship at CUA Law, is expected to occur sometime around January 1, 2018.

The repository was created in April 2014 for two purposes; to bring together under one roof the combined scholarship produced by the faculty and students of CUA Law, and to promote and provide open full text access to this scholarship to researchers throughout the world. At the time the repository went live, CUA Law Dean Daniel F. Attridge said “the rich legal scholarship that has traditionally been featured in our journals deserves to be seen by the widest audience possible, and in a convenient and readily-accessible format.”

Alumni judges needed on March 23, 2018

Once again this year the Newseum will join the Law School in co-hosting the Siegenthaler-Sutherland Cup. We have 24 teams coming to CSL compete on March 23 and 24, 2018. The teams were selected from an array of highly competitive applicants from schools all across the country. This year's problem focuses on the application of the First Amendment to the speech of political leaders on social media. It's a really timely topic that raises fascinating legal questions. We need judges for the afternoon of Friday, March 23rd.

If you can help, please email moot Court Chancellor 32greaf@cua.edu. Thank you!

2017-18 Moot Court National Trial Team Fall Update

The 2017-18 Moot Court National Trial Team wrapped up another busy fall semester with competitions in San Francisco, California and Buffalo, New York.

The season began on a sad note when Hurricane Maria forced the team’s friends and colleagues at the Interamerican University of Puerto Rico to cancel their annual trial competition. Fortunately, they were able to reschedule for April 2018, and CUA’s team will attend with a spirit of helpfulness and support for whatever their colleagues in Puerto Rico may need.

When the cancellation was confirmed, the four students who had spent weeks preparing to compete in Puerto Rico — Robbie Cain (3L), Mario LaTona (3L), Cloyd Smith (2L), and Kevin Tamul (3L) — admirably switched gears and began preparing to scrimmage against their teammates, who were getting ready to compete at Golden Gate University's In Vino Veritas trial competition in San Francisco, California.

With only weeks to prepare, trial team alumna Mary Thuell '12 graciously agreed to coach the team. “Having a practice team separately coached and prepared provided a simulated trial competition experience that proved to be incredibly beneficial to the four first-time advocates,” CUA Law adjunct professor and Co-Director Lindsey Cloud Mervis said.

2018 SPIL Auction - February 2, 2018

Every summer approximately 40% of law students at Catholic University, Columbus School of Law work in public service internships for non-profit organizations and government agencies. Students for Public Interest Law (SPIL) strives to help offset the cost of working in these meaningful, yet unpaid positions by rewarding qualified students who choose to pursue jobs in the public service sector with stipends to support their summer expenses.

Funds for such stipends are primarily raised through CUA’s most notable student organized event, the Annual SPIL Auction. This auction consists of both a silent and live auction which is a fun event that gives students, faculty, staff and alumni the opportunity to take a Friday night off! And we hope you will join us on February 2nd, 2018!

More information to follow. If interested in donating an item, monetary amount, networking experience or activity please contact: spil.auction@gmail.com.
