Dear CUA Law Alumni, Family, and Friends,

We are off to a great start for our 2016-17 academic year.  Orientation for our new students was held from August 16th to 18th, and classes for all students began on August 22nd.  We’re delighted to welcome a new group of students and to welcome back our upper-division students.  This is a brief report on our latest developments and what’s coming up:
 

1. A New Class of Students.   Our Admissions Office, led by Director Shani Butts, continues to attract high-quality students to our Law School.  This year we are fortunate to be enrolling 124 new first-year students to our J.D. program.

Large Turnout for Back to School Carnival Organized By CUA Law Student, Veda Rasheed (3E)

The Back to School Carnival organized by Veda Rasheed (3E) was a huge success. Over 200 families attended the event held on August 20 on the field of the Richard England Boys & Girls Club located at 4103 Benning Road, N.E., Washington, D.C. Rasheed worked for months to plan the Carnival to provide those in need of school supplies with the tools necessary to be successful in the classroom.

 

The Columbus School of Law Mourns the Passing of Justice H.F. Sparky Gierke, III

Justice H.F. Sparky Gierke III, 73, Bismarck, passed away Aug. 7, 2016.  A long-time adjunct faculty member, Judge Gierke regularly hired CUA Law alumni as his law clerks and was honored as Best Adjunct Faculty Member at the Columbus School of Law in 2002 and 2004.  A memorial session of the Court to honor Judge Gierke is being planned for Tuesday, Oct 11, at 1:30 p.m.

2016 Reunion Weekend

It’s almost time to reconnect with your CUA Law School classmates!  Reunion Weekend 2016 is October 14-16 and will honor the classes of 1966, 1971, 1976, 1981, 1986, 1991, 1996, 2001, 2006 and 2011.

For the second year in a row, the Newseum Institute and the Columbus School of Law will host the Seigenthaler-Sutherland National First Amendment Moot Court Competition.  The Law School will host the Seigenthaler-Sutherland National First Amendment Moot Court Competition March 24 and 25, 2017.
