CUA Law Letterhead

A letter from Dean Daniel F. Attridge:

Dear CUA Law Students,

Our fall 2017 semester has reached a successful conclusion. Our students have taken their final exams and turned in their final papers.  Our faculty members are busy grading all of this work, while preparing for the next semester.  We are all ready to enjoy the Christmas holiday break.  Our new spring 2018 semester will begin on January 8.  This is a brief report on what’s been happening and what’s coming up:

1.  Christmas.  On behalf of all of us at CUA Law, we wish you a very Merry Christmas and a very Happy New Year.  Or, if you do not celebrate Christmas, we wish you all the best in commemorating your own faith or other traditions at this time of year.  We hope you enjoy celebrating this holiday season with your family and friends.

2.  Scholarship at CUA Law.  We are nearing a major milestone in the short history of our online institutional repository, called Scholarship at CUA Law, with the 1 millionth download expected to occur sometime in early January.  Commencing in April 2014, we moved our legal scholarship to the readily accessible world of digital online publishing. Our online repository, available at http://scholarship.law.edu, includes publications of the CUA Law faculty and our own law journals, and it also showcases symposia and other events happening at the school. We invite you to check out the website and download your favorite CUA Law articles for free.

3.  Spring Externship Fair.  On February 7, we will host our spring externship fair.  This is a great opportunity for employer representatives to meet students interested in externships in an informal setting in our Law School Atrium.  Please click here for more information.

4. New Emeritus Professor.  CUA’s Board of Trustees has conferred the title of Professor Emeritus on Rett Ludwikowski.  We congratulate him on this well-deserved honorary recognition.

5.  Faculty Changes.  Father Raymond O’Brien and Professors Clifford Fishman, Suzette Malveaux, and Geoffrey Watson will be returning during the upcoming spring semester after leave during the fall.  We welcome them back.  Professor David Lipton will be on sabbatical during the spring semester.

6.  Interesting Events.  This past month has included a number of interesting events:

● On December 5, we had a fantastic turn out for our signature all-alumni Christmas party at the Ritz Carlton in downtown Washington. Hundreds of CUA Law alumni and friends joined us for this festive event.  For photos of the event, please click here.

● On December 7, just before final exams began, we hosted our annual pancake supper.  Hungry students were served their favorite breakfast fare by supportive members of our faculty and staff.

7. Upcoming Events. Please mark your calendar and plan to join us for one or more of the following events.

● On January 24, the Honorable Noel Francisco, Solicitor General of the United States, will deliver the Brendan Brown Lecture at the Law School.

● On January 31, the Honorable R. Alexander Acosta, Secretary of Labor, will deliver the St. John XXIII Lecture at the Law School.

8. Faculty and Alumni in the News. Please continue reading the other sections of this electronic newsletter for news stories about our faculty and alumni.

Thank you for your interest and support. I welcome your comments at attridge@law.edu.
