CUA Law Letterhead

A letter from Dean Daniel F. Attridge:

Dear CUA Law Students,

We’re almost ready to begin our 2017-18 academic year. Orientation for our new first-year students will be held from August 16 to 18.  Classes for all students begin on August 21.  We look forward to welcoming our newest class and to welcoming back our returning students.  This is a brief report on what’s been happening and what’s coming up:

1. CUA Law Annual Publication.  Our annual magazine for the CUA Law community, called CUA Lawyer, has just been published.  You may read it online by clicking here. In CUA Lawyer, our feature article profiles several members of our community who have stepped forward to address the social justice issues of our time.  The magazine includes interviews with several alumni who have served as law firm leaders about their career paths, greatest challenges, and favorite memories.  The magazine also describes, with concrete examples, the practical training offered by our four certificate programs.

2.  Social Media.  You can help us achieve three of the goals of our Strategic Plan 2015-2018 – enhancing our student and alumni experience, increasing our reputation and visibility, and carefully managing our financial and other resources – by interacting with us on social media.  You can find us on FacebookTwitterLinkedInYouTube, and Instagram.  Please visit us there, and sign up to follow us and like our sites and posts.  This allows us to disseminate information about CUA Law to you quickly and for you to spread our good news to your own networks of friends and contacts.  CUA Law is a gem of a law school, but we need your help in getting the word out about us to others – who may include prospective students, employers, benefactors, and opinion leaders.

3. J.D. Program Admissions. The number of applicants to all law schools accredited by the American Bar Association has dropped by 40% over the past few years, and consistent with national trends, the size of our incoming class has decreased markedly.  But what matters most is the quality of the applicant pool that we are able to attract to CUA Law. We remain confident that we will soon be greeting another strong class of CUA Law students. We appreciate your help in recruiting them.

4.  Faculty Changes.  Professors Megan LaBelle, Mark Rienzi, and Heidi Schooner will be returning to teaching this fall after being on sabbatical or leave this past spring or academic year.  We welcome them back.  Professors Marshall Breger, Cara Drinan, Roger Hartley, Suzette Malveaux, and Raymond O’Brien will be on sabbatical or leave during the coming fall semester or academic year.  We wish them well during this time.

5.  Karla Simon.  Former Professor Karla Simon, who served at the Law School from 1989 to 2013, has passed away.  She taught courses in tax and international law. May she rest in peace.

Thank you for your interest and support. I welcome your comments at attridge@law.edu.
