The CCLS Summer Experience

In keeping with the office’s mission of preparing Columbus School of Law students for the rigors of law practice, the CCLS summer intern program provides a select group of law students an experience similar to that of law students and summer associates in the law firms and organizations throughout the Washington, DC area. With the exception of the Advocacy for the Elderly Clinic, much of the formal classroom learning stops at CCLS during the summer months.  However, the hands-on learning and preparation of our law students for entry into the legal profession continues with full force.

Unlike the school year when CCLS students work in teams with other students on their cases, each CCLS summer intern is assigned their own individual caseload under the supervision of one of the office’s experienced attorneys.  This gives each law student intern the opportunity to continue to develop interviewing and communication skills, while also learning to manage an assignment of real cases that cut across many different issues.

In an effort to expose the interns to other areas of the law and to professional networking opportunities, CCLS interns also have the opportunity to attend the annual Washington Council of Lawyers Pro Bono and Public Interest Forum and other law-related events held during the summer.  As a reminder to the interns about the importance of maintaining balance in their professional lives, the office sponsors two social events each year for the interns, which this summer, included an outing to a Washington Nationals game and an afternoon of bowling at Lucky Strike Lanes in Chinatown.

The stories that follow capture, in the words of our summer interns, a few of the highlights of their summer experience with CCLS.
