June is intended to be one of those relatively quiet months in the academic cycle. For the students, exams are over, papers have been turned in, and many head out for summer jobs or other adventures. For our faculty, exams and papers need to be graded, and many start working on summer research and writing projects, or take vacations, or begin planning for teaching next fall. For me as dean, it is an opportunity to reflect on the lessons learned from the past semester and to move forward with plans for the next one. Here is a brief report on our June activities:
1. Courses for Practitioners. Beginning with our fall semester in August, our Law School will be offering practicing lawyers the opportunity to take our upper level courses in a wide variety of practice areas. These courses will allow attorneys to retool or to intensify their knowledge within specialty areas in which our Law School is recognized as excelling. Our courses will be open to J.D. degree holders from accredited schools or those who are in good standing with any Bar. Read more here
The Columbus School of Law now welcomes degree holders from any accredited law school to take individual courses at CUA Law for University or Continuing Legal Education (CLE) credit.
Legal practitioners who want to retool or add extra skills may take one or more upper-level courses. CUA Law offers a variety of courses in a wide range of practice areas, including securities law, international law, public policy, and communications law. Catholic University's upper-division courses offer something for practitioners at every stage of their career.
Classes are offered at manageable times for busy practitioners. The school is conveniently located near the heart of Washington, D.C. on the Metrorail Red Line. For more information or to enroll today click here.
Join some of your favorite professors for a fun night out at the Nats! Professors Lipton, Leary, Wyrsch, and the CUA Law Alumni Association invite alumni and their guests to an evening of baseball at Nationals Park, with a pregame gathering at The Fairgrounds DC. On Saturday, July 20, the Washington Nationals will host the Los Angeles Dodgers at 7:05 p.m. We have secured a block of tickets exclusively for CUA Law alumni and their guests at only $25 per ticket (includes one drink voucher). Appetizers will be served at the CUA Law reserved tent at The Fairgrounds prior to the game. Purchase your ticket today!
The Columbus School of Law’s LL.M. program in Krakow, Poland, celebrated ten years of cross-cultural legal education during its decade anniversary, observed over the weekend of June 21-23 in the stunning and historic European city. The weekend brought together at least eight CUA Law faculty members, many of whom have a long association with the program, alumni, Polish legal educators and practitioners, and current students to honor the unusual and outstanding collaboration between The Catholic University of America Columbus School of Law and the Faculty of Law and Administration of the Jagiellonian University, which have worked together closely since 2003 to offer a course of studies leading to the LL.M. degree.
Reunion events scheduled throughout the busy weekend included a two-part conference, “Into the Future: Tomorrow's Legal Profession, Legal Services Market and Legal Education,” a reception hosted by the U.S. consulate, a reunion event with LL.M alumni coming to the International Business and Trade Summer Law Program annual bonfire, and a closing brunch on Sunday. In addition, CUA Law Dean Daniel Attridge was the speaker for the graduation ceremony for the American Law Certificate Program, which the law school teaches for Jagiellonian University
It was a mark of loyalty to the program that more than half of its LL.M. graduates over the years returned to attend at least some of the events. Read more here.
Reunion Weekend 2013 is September 27-29 and will be honoring the classes of 1963, 1968, 1973, 1978, 1983, 1988, 1993, 1998, 2003, and 2008.
