Dean Designate Daniel F. Attridge
A letter from Dean Daniel F. Attridge:

Dear CUA Law Family and Friends,

I began my service as the new Dean of the Law School on February 1. It has been a very busy first few weeks, but I am enjoying the transition from over three decades in private practice to the strong academic community at CUA Law. This is a brief report on some of our ongoing activities, all of which share a common theme: we are moving forward with highly collaborative efforts to provide a first-rate, practice-ready education for our students.

1.  CUA Law/Ehrlich Clemency Project. While serving the State of Maryland, Governor Robert L. Ehrlich, Jr. developed an innovative approach to executive clemency, standardizing the process and providing intensive rehabilitative services to those who were granted pardons or whose sentences were commuted.  To carry this work forward, we have just entered into a partnership with the Governor on executive clemency.

3.	CUA Spring Externship and Clinic Fair - Wednesday, March 13, 4-6:30 pm

Professor Lisa Lerman, Coordinator of Clinical Programs, would like to invite all DC area alumni to participate in the spring 2013 externship fair. This program provides invaluable educational opportunities, and provides uncompensated skilled assistance to a wide array of government agencies, non-profit organizations, law firms, corporations, trade associations and others. Come join us for the fair and meet law students who are looking for externship opportunities for the summer and fall of 2013.

After the fair, we invite the exhibitors to a reception in our faculty lounge on the 4th floor. We hope you attend! If you would like to participate, please rsvp to csl-externship@law.edu. Please provide a brief description of the functions of the organization or the part of the organization in which the student would work and a brief description of the types of work a law student extern would do at your office. If you have questions, please contact Lisa Lerman at lerman@law.edu. More information about our externship program is available at http://clinics.law.edu/externshipfaqs.cfm

Justice Scalia Guest Lectures Constitutional Law Class

Columbus School of Law students enjoyed the rare privilege on Feb. 19 of a guest lecture in Constitutional Law from United States Supreme Court Justice Antonin Scalia, who spent more than an hour with the class giving an overview of Constitutional history, scope, and meaning.

Invited to speak to the students by Professor Marshall Breger, whom he has known for years, the Justice left plenty of time for questions at the end.

Appointed by President Reagan to the nation’s highest court in 1986, Justice Scalia has served for 26 years, the longest tenure of any current justice. He has visited and lectured at the Columbus School of Law a number of times over the years.

After the lecture, a fortunate smaller group of students chosen by lottery was invited to join Justice Scalia, Professor Breger, and law school Dean Daniel Attridge for a private dinner in the dean’s suite.

CUA Law Jobs and Symplicity

As noted in the Message from the Dean, one of Dean Attridge’s priorities is employment.  Alumni are a key contributor to the success of CUA Law student and alumni employment, and the Office of Career and Professional Development (OCPD) has made it very easy to post job notices.  Simply email the job description to jobs@law.edu.  The job will then be uploaded to an online software system called Symplicity, where it can be viewed by students and alumni alike.  If you have questions, please contact the OCPD at (202) 319-5132, or email us at jobs@law.edu. We appreciate your consideration of our students for you own or other professional needs.
