February

Dean Miles hosted a reception (above) for New Orleans area alumni and friends on Feb. 3 at the Sheraton New Orleans. The event was held in conjunction with the ABA midyear meeting.
January
Dean Miles discussed “Saving Grace with Faith-Based Education” as the featured speaker at a St. Thomas More Society legal seminar held by DeSales University in Center Valley, Pa. Her Jan. 25 remarks were part of the university’s seventh annual Heritage Week.
2011
September - October - November
Dean Miles attended the Virginia State Bar Swearing-in-Ceremony in Richmond Virginia on October 31st. Approximately, 60 members of the class of 2011 were admitted to the Virginia Bar. On November 2nd Dean Miles traveled to Kansas City, Missouri, to attend the second meeting of the ABA’s Accreditation Committee for the 2011-12 academic year.

On October 29
th, Dean Miles, Professors Ralph Rohner, Leah Wortham and Ellen Scully attended an awards program (left) held by the Baltimore City Historical Society honoring former law school dean Clinton Bamberger The ceremony recognized nine people for their scholarly or community contributions to the city. Bamberger, who served as dean of Catholic University’s law school from 1969 to 1975, was among four recipients to receive Living History Honors for his contributions to civic life in Baltimore.
On September 25 – 27, Dean Miles visited St. Louis, Missouri, to participate in third regional Uniform Bar Examination Conference held by the National Conference of Bar Examiners. This meeting included bar examiners and state Supreme Court justices from several jurisdictions in the Mississippi and Ohio River Valley areas (aka the “Big River Meeting”) to discuss possible adoption of the Uniform Bar Examination by the participating jurisdictions. After a brief return to Washington, Dean Miles traveled to Chicago On September 29 through October 1st to attend a meeting of the American Bar Association’s Accreditation Committee. Dean Miles is a member of both the NCBE’s Uniform Bar Examination Subcommittee and the ABA’s Accreditation Committee.
August - Dean Miles’ article,
“The Uniform Bar Exam,” was reprinted in
Syllabus, the magazine for the ABA section on legal education and admissions to the bar. The article extolls the advantages of broad adaption of a national bar exam instead of tests administered by each state’s bar association.
During the first week of August, Dean Miles attended the ABA Annual Meeting in Toronto, Canada, where the law school hosted a reception for alumni and friends including members of the ABA Board of Governors and House of Delegates. During the meeting, she attending the ABA dean’s breakfast meeting and made a presentation on the progress of the Uniform Bar Examination on behalf of the National Conference of Bar Examiners.
Closer to home, the law school also held a networking reception (above) for alumni in Alexandria, Va., at Redmon, Peyton & Braswell, LLP. The August 2nd event was hosted by Nick Gehrig, Class of 2007, and was attended by roughly 20 alumni.

June - Dean Miles delivered the commencement address at Stone Ridge School of the Sacred Heart in Bethesda, Maryland. She attended alumni receptions in Northern New Jersey on June 16th and in Denver, Colorado on June 22nd (above). While in Denver, Dean Miles attended final meeting of the ABA Accreditation Committee Meeting for the 2010-11 academic year.
The law school hosted a barbeque on June 25th for law school professors from around the country who were in town for the Association of American Law School's Pre-Tenured Minority Faculty Workshop. Dean Miles and other D.C. area law school deans attended a luncheon host by Chief Judge Eric Washington of the District of Columbia Court of Appeals on June 29th. On June 30th, Dean Miles and several members of the faculty attended the D.C. Bar Leadership Dinner and Annual Meeting.

April 16 -Dean Miles served as a panelist at the 19th Annual Convention of the National Association of Consumer Bankruptcy Attorneys held at in Washington, D.C. from April 15 to 17th. Her panel’s topic was titled “Top Bankruptcy Cases You Need for Practice.” It covered past and recent case law that every consumer bankruptcy practitioner needs to know. The dean discussed cases addressing the relationship between bankruptcy law and other state and federal laws; finality of the Chapter 13 confirmation order; and modification of residential mortgages and lien stripping.

April 12 – Dean Miles moderated a roundtable discussion of presidents from Catholic Universities around the world on the second day of a symposium sponsored and hosted by The Catholic University of America. The conference,
“Intellect and Virtue: The Idea of a Catholic University,” drew more than 350 attendees, including academicians from 21 universities who represented five countries. The presidents of St. Thomas Aquinas College, Ukrainian Catholic University, Franciscan University of Steubenville, University of Dallas, The Catholic University of Korea, and Providence College participated in the panel discussion that the dean moderated.

March 16 - Dean Miles hosted the Capitol Hill Alumni Reception at The Capital Grille on Pennsylvania Avenue, NW. The event was coordinated by Angela A. Goehl, Class of 2004. It offered alumni working in government affairs, as lobbyists, and legislative specialists to network with colleagues and exchange ideas on how the law school can provide better programmatic, educational and networking opportunities not presently offered.
March 10 – A reception in honor of CUA’s evening law students in recognition of their successful completion of their first year of law school was held at Akin Gump Strauss Hauer & Feld LLP. David A. Donohoe, Class of 1962 and Member of the Board of Visitors and Charles W. Johnson, IV, Class of 1994 served as hosts. Dean Miles attended and offered a few remarks.

Feb. 10 - Dean Miles hosted an alumni, faculty and friends reception at the Marriott Atlanta Marquis The two-hour event was held in conjunction with the American Bar Association’s mid-year meeting. Approximately 30 guests attended, including members of the ABA Board of Governors and fellow law school deans.
Jan 18. - Dean Miles was
among 44 newly elected members to the American Law Institute, the leading independent organization in the United States producing scholarly work to clarify, modernize and otherwise improve the law. Made up of over 4,300 lawyers, judges, and law professors of the highest qualifications, the Philadelphia-based institute drafts, discusses, revises, and publishes Restatements of the Law, model statutes, and principles of law that are enormously influential in the courts and legislatures, as well as in legal scholarship and education.
Jan. 10 - Dean Miles traveled to Charleston, S. C., to attend an ABA accreditation committee meeting. During her visit in Charleston she was able to have dinner with CUA alumni residing and working in Charleston.
Jan. 5 to 7 - Dean Miles attended the annual meeting of the Association of American Law School in San Francisco. She served on the planning committee of association’s workshop for deans and law librarians: “Reconciling Core Values and the Bottom Line.” The workshop also featured Steve Young, reference librarian, Kathryn J. DuFour Library, as a speaker. Young’s presentation addressed how law library physical spaces are evolving in the digital era in a plenary session entitled: “Dean, I Shrunk the Library.” Steve Margeton, director of the law library, joined the dean in facilitating a group discussion on library operations and fiscal management. Dean Miles was also able to visit with several alumni residing in the Bay Area.
