Borrowing Materials from the Law Library

While the law library is primarily a reference collection, law faculty (both full and part-time) may check out books, dvds, and other materials for use outside of the library. Law faculty may request office delivery of library materials by contacting any member of the circulation staff. If a requested item is unavailable, staff will notify the faculty member and discuss alternative means for obtaining the material.

Media Collection
The law library holds a large number of instructional DVDs (and VHS in cases where that is the only available format) on a wide variety of legal topics. To locate titles, enter search terms and select format "videorecording" in the  library catalog, or contact the reference department.

CD Collection

The law library also has a collection of instructional CDs and study aids on a variety of subjects. To locate titles, enter search terms and select format "audiorecording" in the  library catalog, or contact the reference department.

Course Reserves

Print
The staff of the circulation department will arrange for any books, articles or photocopies you wish to be put on reserve for your students. Contact Dawn Sobol (sobol@law.edu, 202-319-5156) or Frances Brillantine (brillantine@law.edu, 202-319-4331) with your reserve requests.

  • All duplicated materials put on reserve must comply with CUA's Copyright Policy
  • The professor bears ultimate responsibility for copyright compliance.
  • All duplicated materials must be accompanied by a copyright waiver.
  • For more information on copyright, please see the library's copyright page.

Electronic
The library can make images, Word documents, pdf files and urls available through the library's electronic reserves database. These items will display on the faculty member's course reserves page. All electronic items (except urls) are passworded — only CUA Law students can access electronic reserves. The library can scan items and convert documents to pdf. The same copyright restrictions apply with electronic reserves. Contact Frances Brillantine (brillantine@law.edu, 202-319-4331) with electronic reserve requests.

Exams
All exams submitted to the library are made available through the library's electronic reserves database.
The exams are all passworded — only CUA Law students can access them. Electronic exams are very popular with the students since they are so easy to access and print. Exams from 1990 - present are available on the web and new exams are added each semester. Please contact Frances Brillantine (brillantine@law.edu, 202-319-4331) for further information.

Print Exams
Print copies of all exams submitted to the library are bound in volumes by semester and year. The bound exams are located in closed compact shelving on Floor 4. Only library staff have access to the bound exam volumes.

Interlibrary Loan

Interlibrary loan (ILL) is a service that allows CUA law faculty to borrow materials from other libraries when those materials are not available at the law library.

Unless the materials are available on campus, materials borrowed through ILL take 1-2 weeks, so it is prudent to plan ahead.  Some requests may get filled more quickly than that, but some can take longer than 2 weeks. The law library does have interlibrary loan privileges with Mullen Libraries and we are happy to borrow materials from Mullen on behalf of faculty.

We can obtain materials on a rush basis (depending on availability) by sending a staff member to the Library of Congress, or other off-campus libraries when necessary.

Contact Dawn Sobol (sobol@law.edu, 202-319-5156) with your interlibrary loan requests.

Article Requests

Circulation staff will download or photocopy articles, library, and online materials for law faculty. Whenever possible, staff will print articles from Westlaw, Lexis, or HeinOnline.

Contact Dawn Sobol (sobol@law.edu, 202-319-5156) with your article requests.
