-Summer Financial Aid Opportunities-

During the Summer term, Columbus School of Law students may choose to take a course at the law school, study abroad in Rome and/or Cracow, or participate in a summer externship.

Students must be enrolled at least half time (3 credits) to qualify for Federal Student Loans during the summer term. To apply, complete the Summer Financial Aid Request Form.

Students participating in externships for academic credit may qualify for Federal Student Loans. Students participating in externships who will not receive academic credit may apply for any of the fellowships and/or stipends listed below. Externships not for academic credit are not eligible to receive Federal Student Loan funds.

Summer financial aid is available in the form of loans. The Summer Financial Aid Request Form is required for all students wishing to utilize their financial aid. Applications for Summer will be posted sometime in late February.

♦ O'Brien Summer Fellowship

In memory of his grandparents Charles and Louise O'Brien, Father Raymond O'Brien created this summer fellowship to encourage students to interrelate their religious perspective with the practice of law. CUA students completing their first, second, or third year of law school AND will be enrolled at CUA for the Fall semester are eligible to apply for summer grants in conjunction with their work at a pro bono assignment during the summer. At present, each student chosen has received a grant of $6,000. Applications will be available in late February and are typically due the last week in March.

♦ SPIL Stipend/Eric D. Weissman Memorial Scholarship

The Students for Public Interest Law (SPIL) and the Eric D. Weissman Memorial Scholarship offer summer stipends to CUA law students to encourage and support the placement and training of legal careers in public interest law. Applications will be available in late February and are typically due the last week in March.

♦ Patton Boggs Public Policy Fellowship

In honor of founding partner James R. Patton, Jr., Patton Boggs, LLP established the Patton Boggs Foundation to annually grant a Public Policy Fellowship to an exceptional CUA law student. A $5,000 fellowship is available to a student spending their summer working on public policy matters for a non-profit institution or a government agency. Applications are available in February in the Office of Career and Professional Development.
