John J. Garvey

Professor Garvey was born in Covington, Kentucky. He was educated at Xavier University in Cincinnati, receiving the B.A. degree in 1945. He attended the Catholic University Law School and was graduated with the LL.B degree in 1948. He pursued graduate studies at the University of Michigan, receiving the S.J.D. degree in 1967. In 1978, he was awarded the LL.D degree (Hon.) by Xavier University in recognition of his contributions to the Church, his profession, and society.

After several years of practice in Kentucky, Professor Garvey joined the faculty of the Law School in 1951. He rose to the rank of Ordinary Professor in 1965. He served as Associate Dean from 1963 to l969, and as Dean from l977 to 1979. He was elected to the American Law Institute in 1978 and to the American College of Trust and Estate Counsel in 1980. He remains active in these organizations as well as the American Bar Association's Section on Real Property, Probate and Trust Law. He publishes primarily in the field of Trusts and Estates, having contributed to dialogues on the validity and uses of will substitutes, the simplification and modernization of probate procedures, and the drafting of estate-planning instruments. Besides the course in Trusts and Estates, he taught Federal Taxation of Wealth Transfers and Remedies.
