Internet Access Through Library Carrels

General Information | Help Desk | Student Information | Laptop Recommendations | Computer Ethics | New Software for Faculty and Staff | Exchange Webmail for Students

Students with laptop computers may access the Internet through the Law School Wireless Network. Please come to Computer Services Office to register for the network.

Students can also use a wired connection at the 160 networked library carrels that are designated with "Live Network Connection" signal on the desktop.

Laptop computers are not permitted in Clark Reading Room (on the third floor), where many students wish to study quietly without the noise of laptops. Please turn off your laptop sound feature when in the library.

Required Hardware Device for Network Access

To take advantage of our wireless platform, you can purchase a laptop with a wireless port or a PCMCIA wireless card. The recommended wireless cards are D-Link Air DWL-650 and Cisco, which is based on the IEEE 802.11 B or G protocol. This card can be purchased at our CUA bookstore and other computer stores throughout the area including online technical venues.

For a wired connection, students must purchase a PCMCIA network card and a cable to connect to the network port, which is located on the tabletop of the carrel. Laptops with an integrated Ethernet Port will only need a cable and will follow the same aforementioned procedure to connect to the Law School network. For those students who wish to purchase equipment before coming to campus, any 10/100 PCMCIA ethernet card will work. A simple 3 - 5 foot length of category five (C5) cable with RJ 45 plugs at either end is required. Students may purchase ethernet cards and cables at the campus bookstore. Computer stores also usually stock these two basics.

Supported Operation Systems

The Law school supported operating systems are Windows 98, Windows 2000 Professional and XP Professional.

Equipment Set-up

The student purchased ethernet card will be installed on the student's laptop by law school staff. The primary contact for installing the equipment/software is Computer Services Librarian, Len Davidson, who is located in Room 322 on the third floor of the library. Hours for software installation assistance will be posted on the law school video information system, as well as in the computer lab and on Len's office door. Students should plan to arrange for laptop set-up during the first three weeks of school.

Printing

Printing from laptops situated at library carrels will be directed to a printer designated for such purpose on each floor.

Second floor printer Room 228.

Third Floor Printer, Room 323

Fourth floor printer Room 426

Retrieval of prints is the responsibility of each student, and carrel printing will be discarded at the end of each day.
