Answering the Call: Legal Assistance for Communities in Need

Challenged to give of their time and talents, CUA law students have answered the call, completing pro bono service in the Washington, D.C. area and beyond.

With a recognition that access to legal services is critical to ensuring equal access to justice, the law school community has volunteered a substantial amount of time during the school year and summer months with local organizations like Catholic Charities of the Archdiocese of Washington and Bread for the City, which represent low-income and underrepresented individuals. Working with with these and other groups, students have gained experience in such diverse fields as immigration law, international human rights law, and mental health law.

Additionally, in what has become a tradition of service, members of the Legal Services Society have traveled to Biloxi, Mississippi and New Orleans, Louisiana for the past three years to assist the victims of Hurricane Katrina. Volunteering for the Mississippi Center for Justice, the Gulf Coast Fair Housing Center, and the New Orleans Public Defender, CUA students have helped local residents address some of the lingering social and legal problems left in the wake of the historic storm.
