Michael F. Curtin, a member and former chair of the law school’s Board of Visitors, was recognized with the Father John O'Connor Empowerment Award on Oct. 28, 2012 by the Catholic Charities Caritas Awards Mass at St. Patrick's Catholic Church in downtown Washington, D.C.
1968
Michael J. Madigan, senior counsel with New York City-based Orrick Herrington & Sutcliffe LLP, is credited with conducting aggressive discovery of text messages helped unravel a landmark Foreign Corrupt Practices Act sting against 22 military and law enforcement equipment executives accused of bribing Gabonese officials. The decision by Madigan and other defense lawyers to target FBI texts was a tactic that hadn't been tried before and ultimately led to the government's decision to drop its case against all of the defendants. The successful defense move on behalf of his client earned Madigan a spot on the 2012 “White Collar MVP” list compiled annually by Law360.
Sen. Tom Harkin (D-IA) has decided to retire from politics and will not seek reelection to the United States Senate. He was elected to his first term in 1985. Key committee assignments included Health, Education, Labor, And Pensions, Agriculture, Nutrition, and Forestry, and Small Business and Entrepreneurship.

Geoffrey Gamble is President of the Order of Malta, Federal Association. He was honored at 2012 World Mission Dinner in New York City. In 2011, the International Chamber of Commerce announced Gamble’s appointment as the incoming chair of the ICC Commission on Trade and Investment.

Theodore Voorhees has been named chair of the American Bar Association’s Section of Antitrust Law for the 2012-13 term. He previously served as the section’s chair-elect, vice chair, international officer and publications officer. Voorhees is a partner with Covington & Burling LLP in Washington, D.C.

Ambassador Charlene Barshefsky, a partner at Wilmer Cutler Pickering Hale and Dorr, has been named by the National Law Journal as one of the 100 "Most Influential Lawyers in America."
Ernie DuBester was nominated by President Barack Obama to serve a second term as a member of the Federal Labor Relations Authority, a position he has held since 2009. DuBester is also a former adjunct professor at the Columbus School of Law, having taught graduate courses in collective bargaining and arbitration from 1997 to 2001.

Howard Trickey has had a fund named for him by the Citizens for the Educational Advancement of Alaska’s Children. Trickey was the attorney who pursued and settled the Kasayulie and Moore lawsuits on the group’s behalf. The group advocates for struggling schools and has directed proceeds from a lawsuit against the State of Alaska to fund the future defense of the Alaska Constitution’s right to education.

Thomas Bender, a shareholder in the Philadelphia office of Littler Mendelson, P.C. (Littler), became co-president and co-managing director of the firm, effective January 20, 2013 for an eight-year term. Bender, founding member of Littler's Philadelphia office, focuses his practice on representing clients in labor relations matters, including collective bargaining negotiations, arbitrations, organizing drives and unfair labor practice proceedings.
Walter S. Booth was reappointed to a second four-year term as a Board Member of the Montgomery County (Maryland) Board of Appeals. The board hears all zoning matters and administrative appeals in the county. Booth is an attorney practicing law in Bethesda, Maryland. He previously served as a commissioner on the County's Historic Preservation Commission.
David Seay has been promoted to the position of executive vice president and chief legal officer at Cerebral Palsy Associations of New York State. Seay, who joined the organization in 2010, had been general counsel for the organization. Seay has nearly four decades of professional experience as a legal and policy expert in the field of health management.

Hon. Marielsa A. Bernard received the 22nd Annual Jurist Award from the Bar Association of Montgomery County, Md., "for upholding the highest standards of the Judiciary and the legal profession." Judge Bernard was presented with the award on May 18, 2012 during the bar association's 118th Annual Meeting and Law Day.

Cynthia Courtney was appointed D4's vice president of discovery engineering. D4 is provider of litigation support and e-discovery software and services. Courtney comes to D4 from the Hartford, Conn., office of law firm Day Pitney, where she was senior counsel for e-discovery.

Terence McCourt, a shareholder in the Boston office of the international law firm Greenberg Traurig LLP, spoke at the American Conference Institute's (ACI) Third Annual Forum on Defending and Managing Employment Discrimination Litigation, held on July 30-31, 2012, in New York City. McCourt, who chairs the labor and employment group in the Boston office, spoke about amendments to the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) and applying the new law.
Ray Watson was recently appointed as general counsel for the Illinois Department of Agriculture. Watson began his state service in 1984 as an assistant attorney general. From 1999 until 2013, he worked for the Secretary of State as an assistant general counsel and as executive secretary of the Secretary of State Merit Commission.

Kathleen Q. Abernathy was elected to the board of directors of ISO New England Inc., the operator of the region's bulk power system and wholesale electricity markets. Abernathy is currently the executive vice president, external affairs for Frontier Communications Corporation. She is a former commissioner of the Federal Communications Commission.
1984
Michael J. Butler was named human resources vice president for Ensign-Bickford Industries Inc., of Simsbury, CT. A 25-year human resources veteran, Butler was previously senior vice president at Cablevision Systems Corp. in Bethpage, N.Y. His new company makes and supplies a broad range of products and services ranging from explosives to the aerospace and military markets, pet-food testing, and specialty chemicals.
Tom DePaso was promoted to general counsel of the NFL Players Association, the pro football union. DePaso has been part of the association’s legal department since 1984,. Earlier, he was a linebacker for the Cincinnati Bengals from 1978-1979.
Mary Ann Mancini joined the Washington D.C. office of law firm Loeb & Loeb as a partner, where she leads the firm’s trusts and estates department. Mancini focuses on estate planning, closely-held businesses and life insurance. She is a nationally-recognized expert in techniques that utilize life insurance in estate and business plans, which include insurance trusts, split dollar and deferred compensation arrangements and life settlements.
D. Michael Reilly was appointed vice chair of Board of Regents for Gonzaga University. Reilly is director of Lane Powell’s labor and employment and employee benefits practice group. He focuses practice on advising and representing small and large employers in all facets of work-related issues.
Theodore P. “Ted” Stein has joined Whiteford Taylor & Preston’s Bethesda, MD office as a member of the firm’s business and litigation practice. Stein focuses on representing businesses and their principals in the areas of business, employment, employee benefits and ERISA law and litigation, as well as estates, trusts, guardianships and family law.

Diane Kiesel is currently an acting justice of the Supreme Court of the State of New York, where she presides over a domestic violence court in Bronx County, NY.
John J. Matteo of Jackson & Campbell, P.C., a mid-sized D.C. regional law firm, has been elected president of the firm. Matteo will continue in his capacity as the chair of the business and employment law practice groups.

Cait T. Clarke has been hired as the new assistant director of the Office of Defender Services. Cait is currently the director of strategic initiatives with the National Legal Aid & Defender Association.
Richard DesLauriers gave the commencement address to Assumption College's Class of 2013 on May 11 in Worcester, MA. DesLauriers is an alumnus of the college. A special agent in charge of the FBI’s Boston field division, DesLauriers leads more than 500 FBI agents, intelligence analysts and professional support personnel responsible for the investigation of terrorism, espionage and criminal matters in New England.
Alan O. Forst was appointed by Florida Gov. Rick Scott to the Fourth District Court of Appeal. Forst had been the chair of the state’s Reemployment Assistance Appeals Commission since 2001. Forst is the former chair of the Labor and Employment Section of the Florida Bar.
Paul H. Schieber presented at the American Conference Institute’s Residential Mortgage Litigation and Regulatory Enforcement Conference, Jan. 17-18, 2013, in San Francisco, Calif. His talk was titled “Loan Servicing: Assessing the Impact of the AG Settlement and the CFPB.” A shareholder with Stevens & Lee, Schieber has lectured and published widely on banking and finance issues and is the co-author of “The Lender’s Guide to Consumer Compliance and Anti-Discrimination Laws.”

J. Caleb Boggs, III has joined King & Spalding as a partner in the firm’s government advocacy and public policy practice. Recognized as a leader in government relations law by Chambers USA 2012, Boggs brings more than two decades of experience in law, politics and public policy. He previously served as counsel to the U.S. Senate Banking and Governmental Affairs Committees, including the Permanent Subcommittee on Investigations. Boggs is past president and a member of the board of governors of the Republican National Lawyers Association.

John Littel was appointed to the Board of Visitors for The College of William and Mary by Virginia Gov. Bob McDonnell. Littel, of Virginia Beach, is executive vice president for external relations at Amerigroup, a health insurance company.
Mark J. Powell served as an instructor for the advanced trial skills seminar sponsored by the National Institute for Trial Advocacy at the U.S. District Courthouse in Washington, D.C.

Maureen Donohue Feinroth is CEO and Founder of Capital Privacy Solutions, LLC, a consulting firm specializing in privacy and information management. Feinroth has more than 15 years of experience in privacy and compliance consulting and is a subject matter expert on global compliance and cross border data transfer. She lives in Olney, MD with her husband Mark Feinroth (1990) and their daughters, Annie and Caroline.
Malcolm L. MacGregor is a partner in the law firm of McDonald & MacGregor, LLC, where he works with clients who are victims of injury in what is known as plaintiff’s civil trial work. He and a longtime colleague and friend opened the firm in 2011. A profile of MacGregor was published in a local newspaper, the Abington Journal, in Feb. 2012.

Alexandra Dapolito Dunn published “Postcards from the Edge: Perspectives to Reinvigorate Clean Water Act Cooperative Federalism,” (George Washington Journal of Energy & Environmental Law, Winter 2013). The article traces the Act’s legislative history of state-federal interplay, and predicts the reinvigoration of its goal of restoring the physical, chemical, and biological integrity of the nation’s waters. Dunn was also appointed by the ABA’s Section of Environment, Energy, and Resources to serve as section chair for a one-year term commencing Aug. 5, 2012. She is a Lecturer-in-Law and advisor to the Environmental Law Society at the Columbus School of Law.
Donald W. Schroeder was selected by Chambers USA: America’s Leading Lawyers for Business as a leader in his field of labor and employment (Massachusetts). Chambers USA rankings are based on interviews with attorneys and clients and assess legal ability, professional conduct, client service, and other professional attributes. Schroeder is a partner with Mintz Levin in the firm’s Boston office.

Rainey Ransom Brandt was sworn in as a D.C. Superior Court magistrate judge on Nov. 7, 2012 after spending 14 years as special counsel to the chief judge of the D.C. Superior Court. She was nominated for the bench by President Obama in March, 2012. Brandt has taught at American University as an adjunct associate professor for two decades.

Elizabeth Banker opened Slate Wine Bar in the Glover Park neighborhood of Washington, D.C., during the summer of 2012. Banker, a former in-house lawyer for Yahoo and part-owner of the law firm ZwillGen, spent two years traveling to wineries around the world in preparation. Her career switch was noted in The Washington Post, July 15, 2012.
Andrew K. Maloney has been appointed vice president, Government Affairs and Public Policy of Hess Corporation. Maloney will lead the company’s international, federal and state relations.
Patrick McPherson has been named co-head of the newly formed patent prosecution division of Duane Morris’ intellectual property practice group. McPherson, a partner in the Washington, D.C. office, represents clients in the acquisition, enforcement and protection of all aspects of their intellectual property rights.
Holly M. O’Neill has joined Gutter Chaves Josepher Rubin Rorman Fleisher Miller PA in Boca Raton, FL.
Scott M. Perry has started his own law firm, Perry Charnoff, PLLC, in Arlington, Va. He focuses on plaintiffs’ litigation, including medical malpractice, catastrophic injury, and wrongful death and whistleblower cases. Perry has been able to secure more than 15 seven-figure verdicts and settlements for his clients. He has been named a Washington, D.C. area “Super Lawyer” consistently since 2008.1997

Joycelyn Y. Tate was chosen as a member of the United States delegation to the 2012 World Conference on International Telecommunications held in Dubai, United Arab Emirates. As a delegation member, Tate will serve as an advisor on proposals negotiated during the conference on behalf of the United States. The International Telecommunications Union, an agency of the United Nations, convened this landmark conference to review and update the current International Telecommunications Regulations (ITRs), which serve as the binding global treaty outlining the principles that govern how international voice, data and video traffic is handled. The ITRs, which were last negotiated in Melbourne, Australia in 1988, are being updated to reflect the dramatically changing information and telecommunications technology landscape of the 21st century.1998
Cassandra Goldman serves as Wabash County State's Attorney, Wabash County, IL. She filed her petition to run for re-election in the March 20, 2012 Illinois primary. Goldman has served as the State's Attorney since her election to the position in November of 2008.

Marc Benzten is the civil supervisor for D.C. Law Students in Court (LSIC), which coordinates pro bono legal assistance and representation to over 6,000 low-income individuals and families from the D.C. metro area by students from five area law schools. LSIC works to fight the consequences of poverty, to prevent homelessness and to alleviate inequalities in the justice system.
Sara Connor was named assistant vice president, corporate and investment bank compliance, JP Morgan Chase.
Katie Gamelin Crowley has joined Dragga, Hannon, Hessler & Wills, LLP, in Rockville, Md. as an associate. The move came after the completion of a two-year clerkship with Judge Louise Scrivener of the Montgomery County Circuit Court.

Jonathan Labukas joined Quarles & Brady as an associate in the firm’s commercial litigation group. Labukas focuses his practice on franchise and distribution litigation, where he represents franchise and other business clients in federal and state courts and alternative dispute resolution forums throughout the United States. Much of his practice involves handling franchise relations and the enforcement of post-termination covenants.

Rita W. Lyons died Jan. 10 at her home in Silver Spring at the age of 95. She retired in 1978 as an administrative officer at the National Institutes of Health’s Heart, Lung and Blood Institute. Lyons was employed by the NIH for 22 years and had previously done stenography work for the federal government. Her husband of 65 years, William M. Lyons, died in 2006. Survivors include her daughter, Patricia Lyons of Pocatello, Idaho.

Aloysius Martin Wickliff, Sr. passed away on Dec. 13, 2012, in Houston, Texas. Wickliff was a general practitioner in criminal, civil, and family law. He practiced for a half-century from 1952 until his retirement in 2002. Wickliff was also an associate professor of law at Texas Southern School of Law and is remembered for the people he mentored in law and civic activism, including his son, A. Martin Wickliff Jr. The Houston Lawyers Association published a resolution upon his passing that stated, “We deeply regret our community’s—indeed, humanity’s—loss of a man who persevered on that road less traveled, that road called justice and equality.”

Theodore E. Breault passed away on Dec. 19, 2011, at the age of 73 at his home in Moon Township, Pa. An attorney and avid musician, he was the beloved husband of Gretchen (Clements) Breault, the father of four and grandfather of eight.
Jim Bennett passed away June 22, 2013. He was a partner in the law firm of Ryan, Bennett and Radloff and Mattoon.

Captain Patricia M. Gormley, JAGC, USN, died on Feb.21, 2012 in Portsmouth, NH, two years after being diagnosed with breast cancer. Capt. Gormley retired from the U.S. Navy in 1990 having served as a member of the Judge Advocate General's Corps for 24 years, including in Southeast Asia during the Vietnam War. She was a faculty member at the Naval Justice School, and also served as the general counsel for the Inspector General in Washington, DC. Following her retirement from the military, she served as general counsel for FEMA, Director of the Women in the Military Project for the Women's Research and Education Institute, Director of Affirmative Action and Equity at UNH, and as an administrative law judge for the Social Security Administration. She is survived by a daughter, a son, and her brother. She was predeceased by her husband, Captain Matthew J. Gormley III, USN. Funeral services were held at Arlington National Cemetery.
John “Jack” Joseph Mitchell, Jr. passed away on March 8, 2013. He was born in Washington, D.C. on Sept. 12, 1940. While attending law school at night Mitchell worked at the U.S. Library of Congress. After law school, he went to work for the U.S. General Accounting Office, Office of the General Counsel. Mitchell is survived by his wife of 22 years, Kathleen Galloway Mitchell, a sister and two brothers. Survivors also include 13 nieces and nephews.

Frank Gaglione passed away on Sept. 8, 2012, at the age of 67. A resident of upstate New York, Gaglione was a prominent Buffalo attorney and civic leader. Gaglione specialized in commercial, corporate and construction litigation. He was the managing partner of the former Saperston & Day P.C. law firm from 1989 until 1996 and for more than decade had been special counsel to Hiscock & Barclay LLP. As a civic leader, Gaglione served as the treasurer of the Erie County Republican Party, chairman of the Canisius College Board of Regents, trustee of The Children’s Hospital of Buffalo and on the Construction Industry Arbitration Panel. He is survived by his wife Nancy, son Frank, daughters Christy Pizzella and Alexa Laub Gibson, his brother Rev.John Gaglione, and sister Mary Ann Polvinen.

Francis J. “Frank” Lorson, a longtime member of the Board of Visitors of the Columbus School of Law, passed away on Friday, Jan. 11, 2013. He was 69. Following law school, Lorson began a distinguished 30-year career at the Supreme Court of the United States, starting as an assistant clerk in January 1972. He was appointed deputy clerk in April 1974 and finally chief deputy clerk in January 1981. A memorial service celebrating Lorson’s life was held on Jan. 17 at the Immaculate Conception Church in Washington, D.C. Five current Justices of the Supreme Court attended. Chief Justice John Roberts spoke, as did Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg, who read excerpts from her correspondence with Lorson over the years. The National Law Journal also published a tribute to Lorson on Jan. 14.

Edith Barksdale Sloan passed away on Jan. 24, 2012, at the age of 76. Upon graduating from Hunter College in 1956 and serving in the Peace Corps, Sloan resolved to work on national problems. Among her many accomplishments, Sloan directed the D.C. Office of Consumer Protection and was appointed by President Carter to the Consumer Product Safety Commission in 1978. In later years she practiced law with her husband and served as a minister in the Unity Church. Sloan is survived by her husband of 43 years, Ned; their son, step-sons, their grandson, her sister, sisters-in-law and numerous nieces, nephews; other relatives and many friends.
Walter S. Booth passed from pancreatic cancer on Oct. 11, 2012.
Helene Tilleux Beale passed away on April 10, 2013. She was a native of Arlington, Va., an attorney who excelled both as a legal professional and as a military wife, and a mother and grandmother. As a deputy clerk at the U.S. Court for the District of Columbia, Beale managed jury selection for the Watergate trials. In later years she was active in charitable work, particularly supporting legal aid while residing in Texas and Alabama and she was an active member of the American Association of University Women. She is survived by her husband, James Beale, her son, James Reed Beale, a daughter-in-law, two grandchildren and a brother.
Hon. Albert H. Weeks died at his home in Keene, NH on December 31, 2011, after a three year battle with brain cancer. He practiced law in Keene for nearly 30 years and was the Cheshire County Probate Court Judge at the time of his passing. Weeks is also survived by his wife, Christine, his children, Samuel and Margaret, two siblings, and his niece and nephews.

Robert Allen Hollenbeck passed away on Jan. 22, 2011. He was a resident of Grosse Pointe Park, Mich. Hollenbeck was born in New York State but grew up in Texas. He was granted a PhD in Pharmacology in 1975 from University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center, and then spent 11 years at the Food and Drug Administration as a pharmacologist, finding the time during these years to also earn his law degree. He practiced family law part time from 1990 to 1998. Hollenbeck married the love of his life, Susan Stine, in 1990 and they spent much of their leisure time traveling and seeing the world. Hollenbeck was a man of many interests, including jazz. He once took Susan to a Louis Armstrong concert and arranged for Louis Armstrong to sing happy birthday to her. Hollenbeck is survived by his wife, Susan Stine, his brothers the Rev. Jon Hollenbeck and Vincent Hollenbeck, and many nieces and nephews.
Raymond D. Kline died suddenly on Dec. 15, 2012, in Alexandria, VA, where he had lived and worked for 28 years as an attorney in private practice. He was 58. After earning his J.D., Kline worked first at a federal agency, and then established his own practice specializing in bankruptcy and immigration law, which he operated until his death. Kline was well-known for his generosity to those with limited means of payment. He married Deborah Buono in 1992. They did not have children.

Darry Carmine passed away due to cardiac issues on Aug. 9, 2012, at the age of 61. Carmine earned a B.A. from the University of Virginia, and later an LL.M. in International and Comparative Law from Georgetown University Law Center. Carmine served for many years as a staff member, press secretary and projects manager for Delaware Congressman Tom Evans. Later in his career, he was an appointee in the administrations of Presidents Reagan and George H. W. Bush, serving in various capacities with the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development, the U.S. Postal Rate Commission, the U.S. Department of Education, and as a trademark examining attorney at the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office. Carmine’s last occupation was as the in-house counsel for Community Development Capital Partners, LLC in Wilmington, Delaware.
