A Place for Everyone:
At the Catholic University of America Columbus School of Law, we have always understood that one of our greatest strengths is the diversity of our community. We value the perspective that each student brings to the law school and we embrace diversity in all of its measures, whether by race, ethnicity, gender, geographic region, language, personal history, culture, or country.
Sanchelle Charles, a Class of 2014 alumna who served with the Student Bar Association, offers this about her experience:
"We are of various backgrounds. Being Trinidadian, I have met and become close friends with fellow law students originally from places such as the Philippines, South Korea, Mexico, El Salvador, Haiti, Peru, Puerto Rico and Poland. We are Christians, Hindus, Muslims, Jews, Democrats, and Republicans. We have vast cultural differences and represent diverse ethnic and economic groups, yet we are forever bonded by this experience.”
Thirty-five percent of the incoming class in 2014 are self-identified as members of a recognized minority group, the largest percentage in the school's history. Students hail from 30 states, the District of Columbia, and three foreign countries. They represent 96 colleges and universities.
Fifteen percent of the incoming class hold advanced degrees in such areas as international relations, forestry, biochemistry, health, criminal justice, psychology and electrical engineering. Eleven have served in the military.
Class members brought an amazing range of prior experiences to law school, including such careers as military police platoon leader, campaign manager, social worker, computer network exploitation analyst, engineering professor, pharmacist, and aircraft electrician.
At CUA Law, we can guarantee that you will learn alongside classmates whose life experiences and perspectives are refreshingly different from your own. This is a vital component of any successful education.
Such an atmosphere is not merely the best way, it is the only way to effectively train lawyers who are equipped to serve society in the 21st century.
