The goal of this course is to familiarize students with the theoretical and practical concerns of federal criminal litigation from both prosecution and defense perspectives. The course deals with the law, theory, ethical considerations, and tactical concerns that relate to criminal practice in federal court from the pre-indictment phase through plea negotiations or trial and appeal. Lectures, class discussions, and reading materials focus on the general analytical framework for prosecuting and defending a federal criminal case. This is not a trial techniques course. It is concerned with the law, ethics, and strategy behind the techniques.
