2010 SPIL Auction Funds Record Number of Stipends
Thirty-four Columbus School of Law students will receive stipends during the summer of 2010 to allow them to pursue public interest work, the largest group so far to benefit from the law school’s annual fund-raising auction by Students for Public Interest Law.
Delayed one week by the heavy snows of early February, the 2010 SPIL auction was held on February 19 and offered its usual diverse assortment of prizes and items for students, alumni, faculty and staff to bid on.
Included were such things as sports contest tickets, dinner and drinks with professors, and for big spenders, even tropical island getaways.
The money raised by the auction is generally matched up to $25,000 by the law school. This year, however, Dean Veryl Miles was able to contribute an additional $50,000 on the law school’s behalf. The total amount was enough to offer each recipient a SPIL stipend of $3,500.
The stipend money is used by recipients to defray the rent and other normal costs of living, and permit them the financial flexibility to take temporary, non-paying public service positions in the legal sector.
“The SPIL organizing committee did an exemplary job this year,” said the law school’s Director of Financial Aid, David Schrock, who worked with the students to make the event a success. “It is wonderful to see the law school community come together once again to support legal public service, and have a lot of fun while doing so.”
