Dear Law School Community,

Still standing! The 5.8-magnitude earthquake of August 23 shook our building to its foundations, but we came through it without any damage to structure or spirit.

This is the first alumni newsletter of my seventh and final year as dean. I am proud of the things we have accomplished together with the critical support of our wonderful alumni. I want to make the 2011-2012 academic year as fulfilling and successful for every member of the CUA Law community as previous years have been.

Despite the challenging economy, our strengths remain our strengths, within the classroom and beyond. Our most recent graduates have enjoyed success in securing judicial clerkships, members of the faculty have been active sharing their expertise with the media over the summer, and a number of current and recent students have had their scholarship recognized for excellence and published in distinguished law journals throughout the country.

We will continue for the third year our successful series of legal symposia, “Critical Insights in the Law and Law Practice: Ethical and Moral Responsibility.” Our fall programs will deal with environmental and securities law respectively, and will be held both in New York City and again at the National Press Club in Washington, D.C. I will share information about our spring programs as soon as it is available.

Some of our most distinguished alumni are returning this fall to address the law school community. Michael Bidwill, Class of 1990 and currently president of the Arizona Cardinals football team, will join us on Sept. 15. The following week, on Sept. 20, Phyllis Borzi, Class of 1978 and now serving as assistant secretary of labor for the Employee Benefits Security Administration, will deliver our annual Brendan Brown lecture. Other highlights will include the Pope John XXIII Lecture, "Can a Bad Person Be a Good Judge?  The Inevitable Impact of Faith and Values on Judicial Decisions," to be given here on Oct. 11 by the Hon. Patrick J. Schiltz, U.S. district judge, District of Minnesota.

I am pleased to report that our new first-year class continues to present the excellent academic records and compelling personal histories that have always distinguished our students. In true CUA Law style, they are a compassionate group of young men and women who took care to begin law school on the right note with a record turnout for our annual first-year orientation Community Service Day.

By the way, if you are celebrating a Reunion this year (classes ending in 1 or 6) please be advised that Reunion festivities will be scheduled for spring 2012 rather than this fall.  Please keep an eye on your mailboxes and your inboxes for more information soon!

Finally, many of you have come to admire the exceptional talents of Jodie Sperico, our director of Alumni Relations for the past seven years. Jodie departed at the end of August to pursue a new opportunity. I know that all of us who were privileged to work with her wish her the very best as she returns home to Long Island.

                                                                               With best wishes,
