The award was granted for outstanding achievements in the development of Polish-American scientific cooperation, education of Polish students and construction of intercultural dialogue. The decoration took place on Thursday, November 10, 2016 (vigil of the Polish Independence Day).
Below are Wortham's remarks from the event:
"This is my 33rd trip to Poland since 1997. There are several people here today whom I have known since that first visit.
My Polish cooperation began when Catherine Klein and I helped Jagiellonian establish the legal clinic, which was the first in Central Europe. Poland now has clinical programs in all public and a number of private law schools, and the Polish Legal Clinics Foundation is a model national network. Poland’s clinical network is the most developed in the world in a civil law country and has been visited by people from many other countries. This is something everyone here can be proud of—the professors and former students who worked in it, Jagiellonian university, and the country.
CUA Professor Ludwikowski opened the door for CUA cooperation with Jagiellonian with the Intl Bus & Trade SLP 26 years ago. This program has brought American and Polish students together to study continually since. The American Law program, which CUA teaches is now in its 17th year, and this is the 14th year of CUA and JU cooperation on the LLM program. I think this exchange of Polish and American students and teachers—often joined by people from additional countries—has been richly rewarding to those who have participated.
For anything I have been able to contribute, I have received much more in return from the wonderful people with whom I have been privileged to work. I am deeply honored by this award."
