Well-dressed, well-prepared and with CVs at the ready, 126 Catholic University law students turned out for the Fall, 2014 Externship Fair, held in the atrium of the Columbus School of Law on Sept. 23. The group included students from every class year, including two LL.M.degree candidates.

Forty area legal employers attended the event, sending representatives to meet and greet students, collect résumés, and answer questions about the kind of legal experience they could offer to the motivated law student. The externship fair was co-ordinated by Professor Lisa Martin, Director of the Experiential Curriculum for the law school.

"We received positive feedback from employers and faculty regarding students’ professional attire and demeanor and assertiveness in approaching employers. Professor Leary shared the excellent news that a few students received offers of employment on the spot," said Martin.

Through CUA Law’s externship program, students earn course credits by working at non-profit organizations, government agencies, in congressional offices, for judges, law firms, trade associations and corporations. Student externs have the opportunity to assist with representation of clients, with legislative and other policy development, and with a wide range of other lawyering activities. Students gain valuable exposure to lawyers and legal institutions. Many students use externships to explore possible career paths and to clarify their professional goals.

More than half of all CUA Law students perform at least one externship during their law school career, and often two or even more.
