Catholic University law school graduate Vytas V. Vergeer, 1993, officially assumed the position of Administrative Law Judge on the District of Columbia Office of Administrative Hearings on Aug. 18.
Vergeer now serves on an administrative court that was created to provide centralized adjudication services for several District agencies. The Office of Administrative Hearings is a neutral, impartial tribunal that holds hearings and decides appeals from government decisions involving unemployment compensation, Medicaid and other public benefits, public space, rent control, professional and business licenses, and building, health and fire code violations, among other issues.
Vergeer had previously served as legal director of Bread for the City, which he joined as a staff attorney in 1994. He coordinated the clinic’s daily operations; recruiting, training, and supervising new attorneys, paralegals, and law student volunteers; assigning referral cases; reviewing cases and providing substantive legal backup.
Vergeer was a recipient of the 2010 Jerrold Scoutt Prize in recognition of his years of outstanding legal service to the low-income community.
