Discovery Communications has announced the appointment of William Jawando as Director, Corporate and Government Affairs, reporting to Alexa Verveer, Senior Vice President, Public Policy, Corporate & Government Affairs.
Based at the company’s global corporate headquarters in Silver Spring, Md., Jawando is responsible for developing and cultivating Discovery’s public-private partnerships with key external constituencies. In addition, he will provide counsel and outreach on various policy issues.
“Will’s effective outreach and relationship building make him ideal for this position to identify and manage issues for Discovery,” said Verveer. “His knowledge of crucial policy issues and constituents will help further the company’s development of public and private partnerships.”
Jawando most recently served as the Deputy Director of Strategic Partnerships and Special Assistant to Secretary at the U.S. Department of Education. In that role, he served as a liaison to the business and philanthropic community on the Obama Administration’s education initiatives. He also served as Associate Director of the White House Office of Public Engagement where he led White House outreach efforts in the areas of education, poverty and on issues relating to children and families.
Jawando earned a J.D. in 2008 from The Catholic University of America’s Columbus School of Law. He was the guest of honor and keynote speaker at the 18th Alumni–Student Reception sponsored by The Black Law Students Association (BLSA) on March 15, 2012.
