Thirty-seven students from the Class of 2013 shared a mini-commencement of their own on May 23 as they received diplomas and recognition from professors for their enhanced level of subject expertise.

The Institutes and Special Programs Certificate Ceremony, held as always a day in advance of the general law school commencement, invited graduates of the five certificate-issuing Institutes, as well as their families and loved ones, to bask in their achievement.

“In earning their certificates, our graduates from these programs are especially well equipped to meet the demands of the modern legal marketplace,” said law school Dean Daniel Attridge. “They have received a first-rate legal education, well-grounded in the doctrinal knowledge and practical experience that today’s lawyers must have.”

The Columbus School of Law’s certificate programs— the Law and Public Policy Program, the Institute for Communications Law Studies, the Comparative and International Law Program, the Securities Law Program and the Program of Studies in Jurisprudence— require successful completion of intensive course concentrations that stamp their students as especially qualified to practice within their chosen area of interest.

After the dean’s welcome remarks, the director of each program spoke in turn of their pride in this year’s graduates and their contributions.

“Your law school years have been amazing and I can’t wait to see what comes next. We need you and we need your heart,” said Professor Sarah Duggin, the director of our Law and Public Policy Program.

Standing in for director Professor Donna Gregg who was teaching in Rome, Adjunct Professor Rosemary Harold urged the graduates of the Institute for Communications Law Studies to take heart in the marketability of their certificate status.

“Keep the faith. With tenacity, that first job will come,” said Harold. “You already know more about communications law than graduates of any other law school in the country.”

Professor Rett Ludwikowski, director of the Institute for Comparative and International Law, was also overseas in Poland. He spoke to his program’s graduates by prerecorded video.

Five of the eight graduates of the Securities Law Program already have postgraduate employment lined up, and the remaining three are busily interviewing. Director David Lipton made a pledge that resonated with everyone in the room.

“I’m promising you all eight will have jobs by September,” he vowed.

The program finished with group photos and a reception in the law school’s atrium, but not before the dean closed with a final thought.

“As part of their educational experience, these students have seized the opportunity to concentrate on specific substantive areas of practice. I believe this will make them particularly well suited for a lifetime of service to others with their law degrees,” he said.
