The event presents awards “to distinguished Catholics in recognition of lifetime achievement, public service, outstanding leadership, and commitment to their faith.”
On June 30, Miles will complete seven years of service as dean of The Catholic University of America’s Columbus School of Law.
The evening’s keynote guest speaker was William E. Conway Jr., one of three co-founders and currently the managing director of the Carlyle Group, a global asset management firm based in Washington, D.C.
The awards were presented by His Eminence, Donald Cardinal Wuerl, Archbishop of Washington, who also gave the benediction and remarks.
Named for John Carroll, the first bishop then archbishop in the United States, The John Carroll Society was founded in Washington, D.C., in 1951 as a spiritual and beneficent organization for Catholic professional laypersons in the service of the archbishop of the Archdiocese of Washington.

In recognizing Dean Miles and three others as their 2012 honorees, the Society said: “As citizens and believers dedicated to the common good of our society, they champion [Archbishop Carroll’s] example by living their faith fully at home, at work, and in their communities.”
Over her career as a legal educator, Dean Miles has applied concepts of social justice and Catholic social teachings in her scholarly considerations of law and law practice.
