Two Telecom Industry Leaders Join CUA Law as Adjunct Instructors

Former FCC Chairman Michael K. Powell and Jeffrey Carlisle, executive vice president for regulatory affairs and public policy for nationwide 4G-LTE broadband provider LightSquared, have joined the Columbus School of Law adjunct faculty as instructors for a new course offering.

They will teach “Regulating the Internet and New Technologies,” a special course available during the spring 2011 semester that enables students to develop a deeper understanding of how to make quality regulatory choices in the face of dynamic technological change. The class will study the issue through the lenses of technology, economics, social objectives, law and politics.

The course enhances the recent launch of the Institute for Communications Law Studies’ updated communications law certificate curriculum, which offers students advanced state-of-the-art studies in telecommunications, media, and information technology law while equipping them with skills needed to prepare them for practice in the rapidly-changing telecommunications field.

“Having Michael Powell and Jeff Carlisle join our adjunct faculty for this exciting course is a tremendous privilege for the law school,” said Donna Gregg, director of the Institute for Communications Law Studies at the Columbus School of Law. “At a time when the telecommunications field is undergoing such rapid and far-reaching change, our students will benefit greatly from their expertise and unique perspectives.”

The Hon. Michael K. Powell served as chairman of the Federal Communications Commission at a time of revolutionary change in technology and communications.  He was appointed by President Clinton in 1997 and was designated chairman by President Bush in 2001.  Chairman Powell previously served as the chief of staff of the antitrust division in the Department of Justice.  Prior to joining the Justice Department, he practiced law with O’Melveny & Myers.  Chairman Powell clerked for the Hon. Harry T. Edwards, chief judge of the U.S. Court of Appeals for the D.C. Circuit.  Chairman Powell is currently a senior advisor of Providence Equity Partners.  He sits on the boards of Cisco and AOL as well as the Aspen Institute and America’s Promise.
